Great Shot Alessandro and congrats on the blue!!

If such were obvious, I'd say the same thing. In this case the railing gives the whole thing away.

The camera is still "panning" in one direction...and for those who say the subject isn't moving...go spin on a merry-go-round for an hour ;-)

Well, the one thing that's true about DPC : Appealing to the voters is far more important than meeting the terms of the challenge.

I definitely disagree with you there; a great photo that doesn't meet the challenge won't do all that well in votes...in this case we had both a great photo AND one that met the challenge..it was both creative and well executed... and the voters spoke with giving it a blue ribbon...can't ask for more than that.

Most folks notion of panning means the camera and subject move, but the background does not, resulting in a blurred background. Now, they also incorporate ideas about hand-holding the camera, and following a moving subject with the camera, which is fairly difficult to do well. Where folks have problems with this being panning is that neither the subject nor the camera are themselves moving, nor are they moving independently of each other, but are both in fixed positions on board a structure that is moving. Thus, the difficulty of this shot is more in line with taking a picture of a friend when you are both on a moving bus, with some scenery flowing by the window than it is following a heron in flight while standing firmly on the ground, matching the speed of the camera's movement with the speed of the heron's flight.
You can argue terms all you want.
None of that reflects negatively on the quality of the image. I love the concept of trying to sip tea in a moving carousel. Mixing the common domestic activity with an outdoors rapid movement activity is an interesting notion.

Fast moving clouds detract from this a bit in my opinion. Love the setup and color, but this feels too energetic for a serene landscape shot.
Then again, others in a more energetic mood may appreciate the blur and feeling of moving as inspiration to get up and go.... so yeah, i'll stop typing now, it's still a good shot and worthy of a good score :)

Firstly congrats Alessandro...a definitely deserved blue!!
In my book it's definitely motion panning...just because it's on a Tripod and on the merry-go-round doesn't mean it isn't. The camera is still following the subject. If the camera was connected to a vehicle and followed a runner...nobody would say anything...there is no difference. Well done Alessandro...great example!
