LOL! I think these days the radial blur would get me a DQ! Funny how the rules haven't changed but the rules have changed. ;-) |

Night of the Stamenby Art RoflmaoComment by SJCarter: Way back when, I scored this a 4. I must admit that was way too low. I've learned a lot since then and appreciate things a little differently. It would probably score a 7-8 from me now. :-) Love the radial blur and the tack sharp focus of the stamen. The DOF/perspective of the petals is particularly striking and I think the colors are great. The crop may be a tad tight, but nice work and apologies for the low ball. |

skiprowby Art RoflmaoComment by Skip: this shoulda ribbonned! i don't know who should feel worse, me or you ;-) and damn that uneven distribution on the bottom end (that by itself should be grounds for a complaint thread).
thanks, art, and my apologies--i'm quite sure glad-2-b-a-dad would have taken the blue! |

Grapes of Wrathby Art RoflmaoComment by SJCarter: This is such a riot! You are a nutty genius! LOL How many of these little guys did you burn before you got the shot? ;) Great focus/DOF, color, & timing to pull this off! |

Lava Channelsby Art RoflmaoComment by TroyMosley: ***Greetings from the critique club***
alright, lets see,
first off i must say, when i first saw your image i was like huh?
then i thought i was like lava, until i read your description, then i realized what it was.
I enjoy the color, its dark but its bright at the same time, which really adds to the texture,
it has great texture, i like how the lines are not from front to rear, their more like front left to rear right, which is good, i would have knocked you if it was just straight back,
ok, so your color, its great, except i think it would have been better if it was consistent throughout, the back has a big dark spot that as i read your commments cost you a few votes
over all i enjoy your photo, there is just some issues with the consistency of the color, and maybe a bigger DOF |

Lava Channelsby Art RoflmaoComment by UNTITLED: The photos that really did well in this challenge really emphasized the texture with bright highlights and dark shadows. This photo with the backlighting doesn't emphasize the great texture of your subject. I don't think it's a bad photo, I think it just didn't move people to vote it at the next level. The voting breakdown pretty much proves that by the lack of super low and super high votes.

Lava Channelsby Art RoflmaoComment by LeeD: I personally think this is a wonderful image and a good example of "texture" I like the colors and the perspective is OK... I think a little more "tilt" might add a little more interest to the image. There are two things that I can put my finger on that may have affected voting.
1.) It is not a "recognizable" image. Granted, I don't feel like it needs to be recognizable to qualify as a "texture", but I did notice the top three images were "recognizable". Again, I have not looked at any of the other entries, so this is simply pure speculation, but it is possible that voters considered this more of an abstract than a texture.
2.) The one thing that stands out the most to me is the very shallow DOF. For a "textures" image, the "texture" needs to be the main focus of the composition. You did capture a beautiful image and indeed a very interesting texture, but due to the shallow DOF, the texture is really only noticeable in the foreground of the image.
FWIW... I really like this image and probably would've given a 6 or 7 (depending on mood and other entries).
I hope this helps. Message edited by author 2006-04-14 07:17:15. |
