Such an incredibly beautiful shot, but it just doesn't say battle of the sexes to me. Perhaps it's my lack of knowledge, but usually the males stay separated from the females for most of the year. So to me, it just seems like a normal shot that you'd find vs one that tells the story. Or the story is human emotions put onto an animal that doesn't fit the story, in my mind... sorry

I didn't have time, nor opportunity, to do a staged shot with humans.

My sky is quite blue. I'm sorry you do not live in a place with a blue sky. In your area, it's likely air pollution or humidity causing dispersion of light rays. Maybe you should travel more.

Well, the bird photo may indeed be stellar. But, this is most definitely a Steller's Jay, Cyanocitta stelleri. It was named after the German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, the first European to record them in 1741. This is indeed the intermountain West species, as identified by the white marks on its face. I appreciate the good photo. I mean no offense at the name correction, but I'm certain you would prefer the correct identification. (8)

Top notch. One of my highest ranked images in this challenge. Good composition. I'm certain it's squared away with regards to horizon. No reason to suggest a rotation, except for the fact it "feels" like it might benefit from a slight clockwise rotation.

One of my top ranked images in this challenge. I like the toned, monochrome processing very much. (A minor clockwise rotation would have squared the horizon.) Composition is good. Maybe slightly less sky would have generated visual benefits for the viewer.

This is my top ranked image in this challenge. I expect this will ribbon. The sand and water detail is fantastic. The stars add a lot, too. If I could change one thing, it would be the location of the horizon line. At middle/center you create a dilemma for the viewer, as to whether to look up or down. Not an easy thing to do, but if you could have included all of this with a horizon line away from dissecting the scene so precisely.

It's not rutting season!

Your average vote cast tells me all I need to know.
