I guess the title is ironic, but due to the lack of contrast I have a hard time with this shot. On my monitor there is very little detail in the dark areas.

The Shadows

Hard to judge for me. Interesting part is the hallow around the shadow's head. Otherwise I'm a bit in the mist about the whole photo. There seems to be some water surface, otherwise it remains a bit unclear to me.

State of the Union

I'm a bit ambiguous about this one - without the title there is little that says "darkness" to me. And then there is the question if the state of the union is dark because of too few or too many bullets. And there may be the possibility that I'm missing your point entierly.
As a photo it is an interesting shot, technically well done regarding the light and its reflections.
