I'm right there with you... Mine is definately an advertisement rather than a "Product" shot.

Some people will argue that INDIGO is a shade of black than a shade of blue...
I agree with a poster before, enjoy the photography. I thought, while looking through the thumbs, that everyone done a good job.

Personally, after looking through the entries and commenting half of them (will get to the other half tomorrow) I can safely say I'm very impressed with almost all of the photos. Well done to everyone. I only wish I could vote, most of you would be getting very high scores from me! |
Why in the world can you not vote? |

This is going to be an interesting one. I figured my shot would get some advertising comments, but its hard to do a product shot without it being an ad in a magazine. Heck half of the good shots in there could be ads. |

Another great start... then mired in mediocrity. 5.4848 (which is up from a lower level). Started in the 6.x range as well. |

Can't complain, except for the nit picking about the difference between an ad and a catalog, geez folks. |

Good score, I think almost all products in mags are ads, why else would they be in there, they pretty much serve the same purpose, same diff In My Opinion. |

My image deserves better ;-).
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one stretching the definition of product shot in some people's minds.
I haven't started voting yet myself but I'm curious as to how far one can go with the stereotypical nuke-it-with-a-softbox-on-plain-background catalog shot.

??? Magazines and Catalogs are two entirely different things.
A magazine ads are promoting a product, enhancing a product in the eyes of the consumer...selling it by making it look good and enticing the consumer to say "I want that".
Now, once you've decided you want to buy that item you go somewhere to buy it. Perhaps a store, or maybe to a "catalog" (online or printed).
Example: Canon camera in magazine ad with brilliant photo example subliminally tells the consumer that this camera will help them take great photos. Now, go to B&H (or open your B&H hardcopy catalog) and see what the "catalog" looks like to place an order.
Some catalogs are better than others. For example LL Bean may have some interactive photos in an outdoor setting in which the product is displayed, etc...
Bottom line? Most catalogs are there for you to place an order after you've been sold on an item via mass advertising (magazine, billboards, tv, etc...). |

The image is OK, not very interesting, very safe, plays well with others, so it's doing well. :-) I shot as though for a stock site. |

they both advertise the product. either way they are both tryng to sell you that product.
Lets say your buying porn mags, you would want the ones (IMO) with the better looking people or higher quality shots, compared to the cheaper ones, where the photog isn't so great, I am not buying anything from that mag, I am buying it for the people in it so in a sense, they are the product, right? Am I now even more confused or lost? :)
So you are saying (example) B&H is going to do nothing to make that product more appealing, or do they just throw it out there and say here, it may look shabby, but buy it anyway? they do rate their products.(which helps in selling, attracting people) |

I think those who did catalog shots are being penalized by the voters far more than those who did more advertising shots. |

Not sure what my pic falls under but its just falling. So if I follow your thinking I guess it would be more of a catalogue shot than an Ad style. I guess I should have gone with my original idea which was more of an Ad style.
Last night 7.1ish..

Here's an advertisement -->
Here's the above advertised item in a B&H catalog -->
I wish I had a Popular Photography magazine and a scanner available...I'm sure many of you have seen the ads for Canon/Nikon/Sony, etc...showing the camera in use with the camera and supporting props. Those advertisement photos are quite different than a catalog photo that shows a product only.
Sorry for the long post...I wanted to show that photos of products for magazines are different than catalogs (in response to liberty('s) post).
Back to your regularly scheduled scores! :-) |

I have a hard time understanding how anyone could confuse a catalog shot with an ad. They are so different. Seemed very straightforward to me.
The voters will do what they do so it's out of our hands anyhow.

I think the key issue, is not whether it's an advertisement or a catalog shot, but that a product is clearly displayed. That is the challenge after all. The catalog was given merely as a suggestion to give people some context. People are taking this catalog/magazine thing way out of proportion, and I think it's hurting people's scores. |
