I just joined and wanted to say hi. I am not a paid member yet but hope to be soon. I have learned a lot in the year and a half I have been interested in photography. Although the more I learn, the more I want a better camera. When I came across this site I was interested in learning more about photography. I took a look in the galleries and Wow! Amazing photos! So hello to you all. Hope to get to know some of you here and jump into some of these challenges real soon.

Welcome!! Jump right on in, the waters icy cold just fine!

Actually, that's the best way to go about it -- jump right into challenges and don't let the score bother you. Compete just against yourself, and see if you can match/better your score each time. It's amazing what I've learned from shooting things that I wouldn't normally shoot. I mean, really! Who goes out a purposely photographs SPAM!?

Welcome Savannah! This is a great community and I am sure you will find everyone willing to help, coach, and otherwise support you in any way they can. Looking forward to seeing your work and enjoy DPC!

Welcome aboard, and to reiterate what Wendy said, don't take the scores too much to heart. Outside of the challenges, (which can be harsh at times), this is a very helpful online community.

Hi!

Do take some time to dip into the 'tutorials' section under the 'learn' tab - there is great stuff in there on everything from how to create a nice border to how to do really tasty black and white conversions on your photos. Lots of knowledge.

Enjoy...

Thanks for the welcome. I was in a small friendly pet photo challenge and when I got reviews on my pictures it was a good way for me to learn what to do to better my work. :) So I welcome critics.

Good thing, this place is stuffed full of them :)

If you want to learn to take photos with huge popular appeal, this is a great place to be.

Welcome, have fun!

Welcome, Savannah.
<-- this was supposed to be for vawendy, but she opted to start winning ribbons right away, so I didn't feel like giving this to her.

IMO, one of the best ways to accelerate your learning is to start or jump into any one of the monthly or ongoing, informal side challenges.

Just be aware what usually happens when you ask for editing help. If that makes no sense to you, just post something for others to edit.

Well, she actually held back about 2 months before letting loose on us with the bluebird militia.

Those bananas must be getting pretty ripe by now.

They're all plastic and lead paint. I got a helluva deal from a Chinese supplier.

I think they're plastic fruit. Be careful when you bite into one!

Okay, so I put my feet in and it was definitely chilly. :p I was wondering, do I have to be a paid member in order to do any of the challenges?
09/15/2010 07:13:17 PM · #20
nope! You can enter one of the two challenges that are due on Tuesday. "that be pirates" or "Portrait with Chair". You can only chose one of the two. The challenges that are due on Sunday are for paying members only.
09/15/2010 07:17:42 PM · #21
What about the side challenges?
09/15/2010 07:23:59 PM · #22
anyone can do the side challenges -- free and open to all! (except you have to send me $50 for each picture you post to the side challenge :)

Okay, so then I am lost about how to get photos on here. If I try to upload to my portfolio it tells me it's only for paid members. Am I missing something?

Oh and will Monopoly money be okay? ;)

That's the rub -- you can't put them on here unless you're a member. Do you have a flickr account or anything? You can post a link to it.

no, monopoly money isn't good enough. I do accept gold, however. I think it's currently at $1300/oz. So just send me .038 ounces each time you post.

I do have Flickr. Thanks for helping me but you have to come get the gold. :p I'll put it right over on the table.
