Just purchased a new D50 and the plastic screen cover I thought I could buy that snaps on the camera doesnt seem to be available for the d50? I researched and it seems this is the part made for the D50:

Delkin Professional Pop-up Shade & Protective Cover for Nikon D50 LCD Screen, Snap On

What I am actually looking for was something like this, this is a D70s cover:

This is part number (BM-5) and I have seen it listed in several *kits* for the Nikon D50, but its made for the D70s. Can anyone confirm that this part works for the D50? It even says D70s on it, so it can't fit the D50 can it?

I really do not want something I have to flip up to look at the photo then flip back down to look through the viewfinder. Why would they make something like that? I just want something clear, and not those sticky screen protectors that peel off.

THANKS :)

In my experience, even the clear ones get in the way. They also have a tendency to fog up underneath if you breath anywhere in the general vicinity of the camera. Are you worried about serious breakage or just scratches? If you're going to be throwing rocks at your camera, I could see wanting the plastic cover, but if you're just trying to protect the screen from scratches, I'd recommend the stick-on film type. I use them on the P&S I keep in my purse and they work great! This isn't the brand I have, but looks similar.

edit: P.S. Don't have a D50 to see if mine (D70) fits...

I wouldn't bother with a screen cover, they just get in the way! Besides, you should ask yourself this question before buying one, "How often does my face scratch the screen?"

I use one something like the clear plastic one on a Fuji S3 pro, and it helps keep hard objects like buttons from scratching it up while hiking around with the camera on a neck strap. I also use a "navprotector' brand stick on, in case grit gets between the screen and the plastic cover. Grit there could cause more damage than no shield at all.
After losing and finding the shield twice, I taped the bottom of it to the bottom of the camera, and no problems since.
All this may only apply to me, as I like to keep the camera within arms reach at all times, and shoot on the run a lot.
( actually, I just don't want my nose ring to scratch the LCD ) :P

No offense, but I posted to ask about a certain cover, not if I needed or should buy a cover, that has already been decided and the answer is Yes. My question was, Can anyone confirm that the BM-5 fits the D50 camera? or recommend another screen cover that is not stick on. Thanks.

I think I read in a review that the screen protectors for the d70 etc don't fit the d50.

no they don't.....I bought one once and it does not fit. There is a lip on the cover that needs to snap onto the camera, there is not a grove around the screen to snap into.

I also got a pop up one, that is SOOOOOO annoyingg....DON"T get it.

I have the 'sticky-type' one on my screen as I am afraid of scratching it while it is hanging around my neck, or on the zipper of my camera bag, etc.

that is one thing I don't understand why they didn't make it so that we could protec it!

OMG!! My worst fears realized. I researched for weeks to decide between the D70 and the D50, no website mentioned that you couldnt put a screen protector on the D50!!!!

This really sucks.

why are you so opposed to the 'sticky' ones...

Mine is fine, and it has gotten marks on it, so I just put a new one on....no biggie..

I agree it would be better with an official cover, but ....

I am using the BoxWave ClearTouch screen protector on my D50. Once I installed it, I completely forget that it's there. For ten dollars, a very useful accessory.

I actually managed to scratch the LCD on my D50 before I got the protector, so I recommend getting a protector to all camera owners.

I don't understand why scratches are such a big deal? I've had my D50 for a year now and have zero noticable scratching and I don't take any special care to prevent it.

So I thought, too, until I got a deep scratch from brushing it on a stone accidentally. Nobody scratches the camera on purpose, and happens.

They wouldnt make screen protectors if there wasnt a demand for them.

Also, I am opposed to the sticky ones because they are just cheap looking. Maybe I need to research and find better ones. The ones I had for my Fuji I had to cut to size, they came off all the time, I went through a dozen in less than 6 months.

Thanks for all the hekp guys and gals :)

The BoxWave sticky protector is barely visible on the camera, it is definitely not looking "cheap" (or otherwise, for that matter). I have had it on since, I think, July or August, and have taken the camera for multi-day hikes and for a two-week Caribbean vacation, with over 6000 pictures taken during this period. The protector shows no signs of wear or peeling off. Also, the manufacturer claims that it can be washed and re-applied, but I had no need to try that yet.

Based upon that recommendation I will buy the little strip thingy hehe I guess I could give it a shot. I checked out the website and this might be different than the ones I had before. THANKS Arcady :)
