Evidently Canon is going to be offering instant rebates on select lenses starting tomorrow (5/17/07). I guess the backlash from their last mail-in rebate nightmare is pushing them to go the "instant" rebate route. I hope that a) these rebates really do start tomorrow, and b) they keep all future rebates of the "instant" variety, and not mail-in.
Has anybody else heard anything about this?

Not heard,

But I just "Mailed In" for a rebate on my 30D under the current European 20th anniversary offers. I hope it all goes smoothly as I worked the rebate into my budget to buy the camera!

nope, not yet ... but I've been looking at getting a wide angle ... so I think I'll wait until tomorrow and see what they're offering rebates on ... thanks for the info!

I'm in the same boat, I just got back from a trip in the Canadian Rockies and rented a 17-40F4L and found myself shooting a lot more with that than the 70-300IS so now I was leaning toward the 17-40F4L or the 10-22mm F3.5-4.5

Thanks for the heads up on the rebates :)

those are the 2 that I'm looking at also ... but still also considering the Tokina 12-24, Sigma 10-22 and Tamron 17-35 ... guess it's going to depend on how much the rebates are ...

Unfortunately almost all the stores around here only carry Sigma for the Canons, there are very few Tamron and pretty much no Tokina. Ive also been looking at that Sigma 10-20 at it's $320.00 cheaper here than the Canon 10-22, I'm just concerned about image quality as I've been quite picky about it lately...

That's why there's B&H.

Unfortunately myself and Canada Customs don't always see eye to eye but I mite consider that 17-40F4L now from B&H, I usually try to buy locally when I can as I also have awful luck on any big purchase items. To give you an idea when I went to get a 24" wide LCD I went through 8 of them before I got one that wasn't littered with dead or over bright pixels...

I live relatively close to the New York border, and when ordering items from B&H or other suppliers I get them shipped to the UPS store in upper New York, who charges me a $5.00 handling fee.

I then cross the border, declare the item in question and pay the PST and GST on the item which I would do if I purchased it here. At present the exchange rate is in the 11% range, which makes the item significantly cheaper than what I have manage to find locally.

Hope this is of some value to you.

Yea for me the drive to the border is a little far being in Calgary :P but on the plus side I only have GST and duty charges to look forward to...

Ill have to check B&H tomorrow as that 17-40f4L is around $879.95+6% GST at a local store here...

You should be able to get it for less. The CDN dollar hit 91 cents US yesterday.

Ugh. I've been waiting for the new Canon rebates to pick up a Canon 5D with a 24-105 f/4 L lens, but neither of those is on the list. I was really hoping to double or maybe triple the rebate amount like they've done in the past, but it looks like I might have to wait a bit longer...

For your information there is no duty on items made in the USA... only the exchange on the dollar and in your case the GST. If you get it shipped to your home from B&H you also would not pay any state taxes.

Yep, that's where I got the info from, and it's why I posted here. If this guy is wrong, there is going to be a BUNCH of dissapointed people! I'm looking into the 17-40 myself. If Amazon puts a $50 instant rebate on it, I'll jump on one. Let's see what happens...

I checked Amazon this morning, annd the rebate is in there. So it looks like this was accurate info. Time to get a 17-40!

That page shows you the rebates that are going on, but you don't need to download anything to mail in. This time, they got it right--just make it simple, and your custommers will be happy!

Oh boy, they are just making it harder and harder for me to resist buying that 70-200mm lens!

No kidding. That 70-200 f/4 is calling my name.

BTW, if you want to see the current B/H prices after rebate, I stuck a list up on my blog.

For those too lazy to click a link, here's the list w/o the fancy formatting:

$100 Rebate:
70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM $1,600
100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM $1,310
85 f/1.2 L II USM $1,670

$75 Rebate:
70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO IS USM $1,070
24-70mm f/2.8 L USM $1,065
400mm f/5.6 L USM $1,025
180mm f/3.5 L USM Macro $1,165
70-200mm f/4 L IS USM $985

$50 Rebate:
70-200mm f/4 L USM $530
17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM $950
17-40mm f/4 USM $630

$25 Rebate:
28mm f/1.8 USM $375
50mm f/1.4 USM $285
60mm f/2.8 Macro USM (EF-S) $360

(its the same as above, I just looked up current prices at B&H)

A bunch of these lenses look like really good buys at this price.
