Probably way off-topic, I know, but since I heard about both 1&1 and coppermine here, I thought I'd see if anyone has had success hosting a coppermine gallery via the free 1&1 webspace offer. Hopefully, I won't get too long-winded.
I've done all the configuration, mySQL is working, phpMyAdmin is up and running, coppermine is installed and everything looks great (only need to decide on a domain name)... until I try to upload a photo. I get an error that appears to be coming out of gd, the module used by coppermine to render and otherwise process the images for the gallery (and since 1&1 is running an EXTREMELY old version [1.6.3 if I remember right], probably to keep the GIF compression features that are unavailable in later gd versions, there is little to no information from the gd folks.) The error indicates that the JPEGs I'm working with are either corrupt or cannot be handled by the gd engine, and I've found reference to the inability of even current versions of gd to handle certain types of JPEGs (I didn't know there was a difference), specifically CMYK-format files. RGB files will supposedly process correctly. Some of my files are out of PS Elements 2.0, others straight from my camera. I've checked, and the mode on all files is RGB, and I've tried saving files both with and without colorspace data. Nothing appears to work. The only image file I've been able to upload was a file I saved out as a .PNG, and that looked like $*%! when it rendered out.
So... long story short: Has anyone successfully implemented a coppermine gallery on 1&1's free webspace? Or do I just pack it in and try something else? Or, since it appears to be an issue with an obsolete version of gd, am I doomed no matter what? I would really like to run ImageMagick, but according to 1&1 support, that's just not going to happen. 3 years free is a great offer, but only if I can host the kind of site I would really like to!
FYI, in case it's of any help, here's the URL to the gallery so far: pncowley's gallery |
