It's different, that's for sure. Kinda looks like it was NeatImaged to death though.

yeah? is that it?
I coudln't figure it out.. why his images look the way they do.. with that soft, impact. All his pictures have that sort of look.

Her face has no poors, it's been attacked by neat image...

Very striking image though... I like it!

Plus he has heavily blurred the background, you can see evidence of that next to her right arm.
She is a beautiful child.

yeah you know, i think your right...
also now looking at it.. on the left side of the image, you can see pretty clearly a 'blur' technique line... where it all of a sudden gets REALLY blury, however, i think it does work, or adds to the photo.

Nevermind the kid. His/her other photos are incredible.

Some good guesses, but not entirely right ;-) The background is marginally blurred (this was shot at the far end of the macro mode so the background was pretty blurry anyway); I don't know what Neat Image is (though you're right, her face was blurred in PS); the soft effect, in this instance, is the result of a blurred layer set to overlay blend mode; and you missed the most glaring error - I inadvertently desaturated the right edge of her left sleeve (it looks really noticeable to me).

The reason this image was so heavily manipulated is that I liked the shot, but she looked really tired and had terrible shadows on her fact from the overhead strip-lighting. Normally I would have binned it, but there was something about her expression that made me want to keep it.

And thanks for the nice comments - if I ever get the time I guess I should contribute here. I registered ages ago, but just haven't had the time to get involved.

cheers,

hi there djn1

I am glad to get the whole story about the photo... :) and glad you decided to poke your head in here.

I am not very good at using adjustment layers... does anyone have any good tips or know of any good tutorials.

You really should try to contribute. I really liked what I saw of your photos. Will be back to have another look when I've got more time.

That kid is wearing a bunch of make-up, too.

The negative space on right side is distracting, background blur is done poorly(cheap camera)too much software, not enough photography , I give it 6 !

wow.. that's harsh.
:).....
but fair enough.
yeah i dunno.. i don't find the negative space distracting.
i don't think she was wearing makeup though.. i think the very dark eyes are just a result of the adjustment layer techniques he used.

that really looks like makeup

I love the picture. I don't know anything about Neat Image or.. blurring backgrounds or anything. I just point and shoot. The furthest of my editing abilities is cropping. But I agree with how striking it is.. looking at the whole rather than scrutinizing all of the little parts, I think it's beautiful and... yes, striking is really the word for it.

My two cents!

TG73: oddly enough I don't tend to apply make up to my two year old before taking her to the supermarket - that would be a little excessive. Leaf is right, the effect is a consequence of using a blurred overlay adjustment layer. There's a good book my Martin Evening that covers the basics of adjustment layers if you're interested in finding out more (Adobe Photoshop for Photographers) ;-)

pitsaman: the blur is mostly a consequence of using macro mode. Additional blur was added by a 150px feathered selection and a Gaussian blur of around 8px - how would you have done it? As for the camera, it's a Canon G5, so no, not overly expensive, but then neither is the 300D. And yes, it's over-processed, but it was a shot I liked that required a lot of work to make it presentable. I could have binned the original, but I didn't. Personally, I like it, and it's got some great feedback on my site - so I'm happy :-D

Leaf: thanks.

htseg: yes, the key word there is 'looks' - it isn't ;-)

lindsay: thank you.
