Hi guys,
I got a good deal on a D300 and actually bought the camera. I had too cause I don't have my D50 anymore. Anyway, I am hoping I didn't get a grey market camera, so I am trying to figure out if Nikon D300 serial numbers start with any specific patterns for USA markets. If you have a D300 could you tell me if your serial number starts with the letter "U" or any letters. Mine are all numbers and no letters precede the serial numbers.
Appreciate the help.
just a side note, I did register the serial number on nikonusa. so is that good enough to show i didn't get grey market?

Serial numbers beginning with:
2 - Japan
3 - USA
4 - Europe (excluding UK)
5 - Canada
6 - Australia / New Zealand(?)
7 - Asia (excluding Japan)
8 - UK
From here
Eta; After posting, I read the rest of the thread where others disputed the #'s. This is farther down;
"Okay full disclosure I called Nikon USA's digital tech support twice and hit option two for sale information and the gentleman told me that the numbers do refer to the country to be imported to "sort of" was his exact words. He told me all D80's, D50's and D40's will start with 3 if they do not have a 3 they are not Nikon USA. I asked in the case of the D2X and several people I know have a SN starting with 5, the rep told me these are low volumn limited distribution items and are a 5(Dave said this) so you can register them for warrenty and digital support. Not sure what low volumn limited distrabution means, maybe they mean you can't buy a D2X at Circuit City but you can a D80 or D200.
Adrian the supervisor also said the D200 was in such demand that Nikon USA bought every available D200 regardless of its code. Sounds to me that Nikon uses the code very losely and Adrian agreed. I apologize to the planet for any confusion this has caused and will now go hide but do not get excited I will on begone a minute.
He said the codes became standard after the D100 thus the D100 is not included I did not ask about the D2H or D70."

Thanks BeeCee. I suppose the fact that mine starts with 3 is a good thing. ;p |

awesome, mine starts with 3 also. As an added bonus, you can probably contact nikon customer service and let them tell you for sure. |

No problem, it's something I'd wondered about too, but had never got around to checking. Yayy, mine's a 5! (kinda like my average....) |
