Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

This is the phrase you have seen. "Owls seem frightening, but the eagles have dealt with them before. Their young are safe." Someone may have heard an owl or seen an owl. Although, almost all owls are nocturnal. The eagle adults are close guardians, so I doubt there's a risk from owls. The owls would come out on the short end. Owls would be iincubating eggs in their own nests right now. We do know that ravens and crows will predate an owl nest, driving the owl off a nest. I'm not aware of ravens mobbing and defeating an eagle.

eta: A moderator just added this: "Social streaming is unmoderated. It has many incorrect and objectionable pieces of information. Take anything you read there with a healthy dose of skepticism. " I think there are some juvenile delinquents adding ridiculous comments to the chat. Shouldn't those children be in school?

Thanks, hahn23. I haven't looked at the forums there. I've been getting all my information here so far. I spend too much time watching them anyway.

Overnight snow! Diligent parents. Good views of how wild birds cope with and adapt to weather events. Decorah Eagles.

I saw the weather forecast for possible snow last night. WOW They were right! The eaglets are getting so big now that at least one of them wasn't completely covered by mom last night. I'm happy to see that both parents are on the nest keeping the young ones safe and warm.

Poor things. They look so miserable :(

With their wings and bodies, tenting and shielding their offspring from the wind-blown snow. Very impressive and wonderful nature scene. Their storing of food in a prey pantry now makes a lot more sense.

the buffet table is looking a bit bare. Daddy needs to go do some hunting.

I think Daddy brought not one but TWO fish this morning when I tuned in. At the same time. I thought that pretty impressive! While I watched, Mom fed the two bigger ones but not the little one. Poor little one got shoved back under Mom to stay warm without a snack...

What is the new thing in the nest now? Is it a bird of some kind?

I only had a couple of quick glimpses today of the eagle family. (My computer is again kaput and I'm using a little dinky laptop (LDL for short) so not much action from me anywhere today, or for a while, I"mafraid..

Did see the snow this morning, and again am amazed at the resilience of the critters of the natural world. Mom and Dad make good substitutes for central heating.

Only 50,000+ people watching. Eggs (3) to hatch any day now. It's more fun to watch this nest than do the work I'm supposed to be doing. LOL!!!!!

Bumping the link.

got my computer back again, and had a good look at the eagles this morning.
those little eaglets are doing a pretty good distance job of 'squirting' as I see the supporting tree branch is getting decorated.

Maybe tmi, but here goes. Eagles and most (all) other raptors have developed the "squirt" excrement over the edge of the nest method of sanitation. In the wilderness, birders will try to spot the "wash" on high rock faces to spot the nests of eagles, hawk and falcons. Some birders are expert enough to be able to identify the species of raptor by the nature and pattern of the wash. Some raptors will re-use a nest year after year.... for many generations. The wash is part of the site and most does go over the edge, rather than in the center part of the nest.

Compare that method to the fecal sac method utilized by most cavity nest dwelling songbirds and woodpeckers. (Tree swallows, bluebirds and downy woodpeckers, for example.) Fecal sac info.

Both methods ensure:
1. Sanitation
2. Safety
3. Avoid attracting predators or pests.

Those babies are looking huge today. And they seem to be starting to get some of their parents' colouring too.

Oh dear LORD they're cute!!!!

Alas, it's snowing in Iowa this morning. the camera housing is covered by snowflakes, but the commentary along side says the eagle family is doing just fine.

They need a nest cam wilt windshield wipers.

Richard, TMI! But REALLY interesting :-)

The weather there looks awful. I've had occasional glimpses of an adult bird moving around but haven't been able to see the babies yet.

Light rain now. Wind chill of 27 Brrrrrrr

Wah! I can't see a thing. Apparently the camera is covered in ice! Poor things! What miserable weather for spring.
04/20/2011 07:00:46 AM · #224
Cute! I was in a panic for a moment...only saw two, but all three are there. :)

Rough winter-like weather in the past 36 hours. The eagles are doing well. I see a new fish was placed in the prey pantry in the last few minutes. They like fish. The snow and ice and rain cleaned the screen.
