He took three babies from the Red Robin family. So sad, but face it it's nature.
I heard a commotion across from my house in the trees, grabbed the camera and got some shots. Nothing worthy of the FS, so they just get shared here.

I had no idea blackbirds ate baby birds. That is sad, but you're right, it's nature.

Nature is awful sometimes.

Looks like a nasty ass crow to me. Is it nature to take out that crow with my Daisy Red Rider?

Thanks. It was so hard NOT to intervene, but had I done so the blackbird would have just come back later. I also believe that we have to allow nature to run it's course.

Amazing shots. It is nature. I'm surprised that he got all three, though.

Good series, albeit red in tooth and claw. Crow, not blackbird, though.

Those crows try to get to the mockingbird babies too. We always see Mockingbirds chasing crows. As the bigger crow tries to fly away the mockingbird keeps on divebombing it over and over until it chases the crow away.

yes, I stand corrected it is a crow. If SC wishes they can rename the thread to reflect the correct bird thief

Where I come from crows and blackbirds are two different things and our blackbirds wouldn't do that. Crows on the other hand, I have seen snatch and kill an escaped budgerigar.

Great series, Linda. "A Cry for Help" could easily be processed into a FS entry, I kid you not. Hell of a shot. Wouldn't win, but it'd get some exposure...

I had no idea crows ate baby birds. I always hated them for their noise and chasing off littl-er birds from feeders but to actually eat babies. JERKS!

They are carnivores. Omnivores, really. You can see crows eating roadkill all the time, they love carrion.

"Crows like to feed in open areas, and sometimes forage and catch food cooperatively. Crows are carnivores (meat eaters), granivores (eaters of grains and small hard fruits), and invertevores (eaters of invertebrates). They most commonly eat small animals, grain, fruits, insects, and carrion (the flesh of dead animals). Crows are essentially opportunistic - they will eat whatever is available."

Wholeheartedly agree!

Yikes. And I always thought a crow or a raven would make a cool pet. I know it's just nature, but nest robbing seems pretty nasty to me.

That's nature. We see it as sad but it is simply necessity to the animals and birds.

why you'll see the red-winged blackbirds around here divebombing crows and chasing them away from their nest. And just yesterday got some shots of a crow hassling and chasing a hawk, for the same reason - the hawk would rob its nest, too, given the chance.

And some years ago in Vancouver I heard the most gawdawful commotion coming from a tree across the street from us. A starling was kicking up a tremendous fuss because a crow had managed to nab, kill, and was eating its mate.

Crows are magnificent birds. They are among the top 10 in intelligence in the entire animal kingdom, let alone birds. Right up there with elephants, porpoises, chimpanzees, dogs. They are fantastic mimics, excellent fliers and useful scavengers. They are very trainable, including recognizing and mimicking human speech (like parrots and minas).

They often raid the nests of other birds for eggs and babies, but they are part of the food chain and many predators feed on crow's eggs and babies as well.

Many on this forum do the same to other animals. They even have special names for such food, veal, for example, and have specific fetishes about how they like to prepare eggs (scrambled, boiled, etc.) taken from other animals. The crow does it because it is his place in nature. We do it willfully.
