I want to make a large print (maybe around 4-5 feet each side) and have it printed on a canvas (like a painting) to put on my wall (a friend of mine told me she wanted one too). This service must be available somewhere in the states (or elsewere), this is probably possible in Iceland, but I figure it will cost a shitload of money (that I don't have).

Can anybody point out a good site that offers this kind of service? (must ship abroad and offer good quality and price). Thanks for reading.

I looked for a while - was wanting to do 4 panels around the same sort of size you are talking about (40x60s) All I could find were very expensive options. I don't think places like Kinkos do prints in this range, that are any good.

You also need to give some thought on how you plan on hanging it - are you going to frame it, or get it stretched - different canvas printing options require different finishing/ mounting etc. If you find somewhere, let us know!

Does Kinkos do it on canvas? (for that texture)

Gordon, I was thinking about getting it stretched. No frame, just the photo all the way to the edges. The site that bledford pointed out seems to do what I was thinking about, they deliver it stretched on a wooden frame. It's seems a bit pricey though, I was hoping the USA had something cheaper. I would settle on getting it rolled up in a column (? for lack of better word, pulp-pipe might explain what I'm thinking) and having it stretched out on a wooden frame back here in Iceland.

I'm by no means an expert, but there seemed to be two types of printable canvas - depending on when it got stretched, either before or after the printing. There are also options to mount it on a frame, or directly to a back board - it got very confusing for my little brain.

Mailing (or shipping) tube is the most common term in English.

Out of curiosity, may we see this image you wish to print that large? I'm wondering what kind of impact it would have as a print 4'x4'/5'x5' and need some sort of visual to imagine the enlargement.

Also, is there any reason why you've decide to print on canvas? Just wondering..

why not add a canvas filter in photo shop and get it printed on matt finish photo paper (how close will people be looking at it from)

Bran-O-Rama, I actually havent picked or shot the image going on the canvas. I was thinking fairly abstract, a macro probably, where absolute detail don't matter as much (4-6 MP would not be very detailed on such a large print). I'm not putting my face or anything on the wall ;)
I have this big empty wall at my new flat, perfect for a large picture. My friend has a very nice piece of art on her wall, a photo (film) macro shot of moss printed very large and it turned out very nicely.

Birgir, I'll check out Frank og Joi, thanks for your input.

This is probably of no use to you, being in the U.S., but I have seen a lot of the work and they do a beautiful job.

This was the shot I was planning on printing

Idea was to get four panels done (two inverted) and hang them as a reflected set of 4, something like

Wanted the canvas stretched over deep frames, printed right to the end and with about an inch overlap/ frame depth. Then I'd hang them unframed, but with the sides printed.

I've printed it small on canvas paper - the end result is very different to matte paper.

Check Motophoto or Ritz. They can't do it in store- but they can send it out to one of the larger US labs that can do something like this. Also check your local camera store. Most of them use outlabs for their processing.

Nice photo Gordon, perfect for canvas printing I'd think.

Clara, I'm affraid the icelandic camera stores don't offer great printing services for large prints (and they are expensive as hell)

That´s for sure.

Some weeks ago I saw a large photoprints on a nylon which was steched over wooden frame like a painting. That was very cool. Dont know where that was done but shall try to find out.

Costco does it. The samples I saw last night were block mounted, but there may be other options as well.

"Starting at $16.99" is all I saw. I didn't look deeper into it (those are Canuck dollars too; about $12.00 US)
