Does anyone find that this site seems to attract people who give unhelpful comments on winning photos? I recently won a ribbon but had quite a few comments simply telling me that my photo was the same as others done before...I don't claim that I am the only person to come up with a concept, these days its hard being original. I have just entered another comp and yet again got a comment that to be honest doesn't offer any advice - it simply has a dig at what I have done. Why is this? Another site I am on is lovely and people offer constructive advice on your shots, theres no nastiness. Now I am not saying all comments are like this but I was shocked at getting a ribbon anyway, to have rubbish comments then offered feels like a bit of an insult!

Rant over!

You have to understand that the majority of members here are incarcerated in prisons across the globe, doing many years of hard time. The site was created by an ex-con who wanted to give back by creating a place where convicted felons could vent their frustrations with daily prison life and lash out at society (note the drab gray colors to provide a sense of familiarity and security). Don't take it personally, they are just a product of a sick society. If it offends you, you should stick with those friendlier sites. This is no place for a nice girl like you.

perhaps those comments are telling you to try and find inspiration in areas you may not have explored before. no critique is bad critique in my opinion

also, for what it's worth, you might try commenting more. you might start to understand some of the comments and not just the ones about originality

FYI, smardaz is not a con, he's the prison psychologist.

Not unusual to get comments like that. If people don't want to see repeated ideas, they shouldn't look at the front page.

Now this other thing you mention, what is this site you visit, I've been looking for another photography site to frequent and haven't found any others to my satisfaction?

The only thing I am less successful at than submitting original photographs is finding original and insightful comments to make on the photographs of others. But at least trying to keeps me occupied in the bottom bunk of my little prison cell.

I do like that one of the newer members who noted that he had seem similar images to your lovely lego shot, had submitted
which looked slightly like an old entry of mine

Funny how few ideas have never been seen before. Look at how long the folks making those types of comments have been with the site. Give it time, they will usually learn or leave.

I always try and see the point of the person commenting as that person has made effort in used his time to leave a note and that should almost always be appreciated. What i do find hard to accept is when a person leaves a comment which clearly shows me that he/she has not studied the photo or thought about what they are saying. Such as.. I love the Blue background when it's really a picture of green rolling hills or maybe even.. I would prefer there only be 2 people in the picture rather than 3.. when There are in fact only two. It's at time like this then that I just for a brief period in time loose my stride, frown but then compose myself again and move on
Speed voting is common on DPC and I can understand that and at least when you do that, anonimity helps... But speed commenting opens yourself up and you are at risk to show your own igonrance and maybe even stupidity at times.

If you are going to speed comment "Rather keep your mouth shut and have the world believe you are a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt" (quote)

You sum up what I mean, ideas are rarely unique!!! But your comments did make me giggle!

Ah, well I only comment when I have something useful to say...maybe others should take a leaf!

Hm.
Yeah, there are tons of unhelpful comments sprinkled about, particularly after a challenge and particularly for winning photos "great job" blah blah blah. Almost all of us are guilty of this now and then. ::shrugs shoulders::
But, in my opinion, they are not of the same nature as those you think are unhelpful. How a criticism that something is not original is not valid is beyond me, unless you're saying your entry has no semblance to anything before it, which is an indefensible position. I know what you're saying about things being inherently derived from something else, but where do we draw the line? Just as you find such criticisms obtuse, some of yours will undoubtedly be seen as obtuse. Criticism is not designed to hold hands, you can and should hear things you don't necessarily agree with. I, for one, am glad there are dissenting opinions. What a bland, boring life it would be if everybody unanimously derived the same pleasure from the same shots.

If you don't like being called unoriginal, let me kindly suggest never entering a shot here with a water drop or a wine glass. You'll have your heart torn out :)

Most of your 13 comments consist of variations of "I Love this!" How is that any more useful than "Not very original" or "Been done before"?

All 11 of your comments are to the effect of an unoriginal "love this". Besides being a virtual pat on the back, how is that useful? I think smardaz meant leaving constructive comments on the photos that you don't "love" to try to help them, and yourself.

I am not saying " love this" is wrong, but not every single time. Especially since you are complaining of useless comments...

The most useful/helpful tutorial on DPC.

And the second most useful/helpful.

Alas, those that would most profit (as commenter and as photographer) from this brilliant and free advice are the least likely to bother reading it.

Well good for you. I recommend that no one should try to persuade anyone to comment anymore then they want to comment.

Well, this ain't Flickr. In the course of a paragraph, your perception of these comments went from unhelpful to nasty to insulting. I don't recall any rule, written or implied, that says thou shalt not comment on originality -- or anything else for that matter. You might perceive this as a weakness of this site, but many of us find it to be its greatest appeal. Comments here are always honest but rarely nasty.

Also, one of the prices you pay for a ribbon is a lot of visibility. If your idea is eerily similar to something that's been done before, expect to be called out on it. It's hard being on the front page. That's why I avoid it.

Only a third of the comments you've received have been marked as helpful. Does this mean that two thirds of them are unhelpful?
