I think there is a guy in Nigeria that will trade you straight across for your D300 and give you an extra $150 for your trouble. :)

Street price is $6000 quite a bit less then the new 1DX. It's not enough of an update for me to move my D3s for though.

An ad for the D4.

$6,000 sounds better than $8,000... what I'm hoping for is that D4 will drive D3 prices down, and maybe I could find the good deal on one

How do you get $6000?

5800 euro= 7,417.57 USD...

Being a Nikon ignoramus and all, is this a FF camera or cropped? It's not immediately obvious from the copy...

The street price in the US has no straight reference to prices abroad. My Nikon rep told me street price was going to be $6k. I can only assume he isn't full of it.

Gotcha- I just thought you were going off what the ad said since you said what the price was and then linked the ad.

ETA: The mpix rating is good news on my side- there was speculation the D800 would have some ungodly horrendous amount, and this makes me renew my hope that it won't be some ridiculous number.

I can't in good reasoning think they will shove 36MP which is what was rumored onto the D800. That would put a huge damper(assuming they were good pixels) on the sale of the D3x. I don't think Nikon is stupid enough to do that.

At any rate, when I can shoot up to 12,800 with very good results, I don't do video and in a pinch I can shoot 25,600 ISO for newsprint. I don't see a D4 in my future. I might move my D3 for another D3s. But 12MP is plenty and 4 more won't make that big of a difference to me. The largest print I sell is 20x30 and I have no issues with doing that with 12MP now.

Exactly. I saw the "specs" and couldn't help but scoffing at them, but then I started to wonder if Nikon was trying to really play in the mpix race. The average photog can shoot plenty big with current resolutions native, and then enlargement works well enough these days that you can certainly do that too. It didn't make sense to me either, so far as the competing bodies goes, I'm glad I'm not alone in finding that odd.

I don't think it can recognize your Uncle Joe from Uncle Gerald, but it would be able to recognize Uncle Joe from his birthday cake... helping you obtain focus.

I know how face recognition works. And if you're using a rig like a D4, I'd hope you don't need the camera to try and tell you where to focus. That seems like one more annoying thing to subvert in practice. Who buys a pro body and expects it to find faces? That's absurd.

Don't be such a buzz-kill, Derek. It also has fireworks and pets settings.

If the dial on the top left has a barking dog, I'm not sure what I'd do. Either buy it for the sake of irony or lose faith in professional photography ;)

lol, OK, ok I was thinking since you thought it was weird it was because of some other strange reason. Point taken.

I am in two camps on this one. As far as a piece of equipment thinking it knows better than me, I can get very frustrated with that (Microsoft Word anyone). When shooting lifestyle portraits however I find myself just using center focus and re-framing after focusing the camera. This gets to be a lot of irritating camera movement, especially if the camera is on a tripod. Sure, I could use the focus points to select one on the face but if you switch the camera from vertical to horizontal or recompose the picture having the person on the left / right etc, then choosing new focus points is also a lot of work. Having a camera find the face to lock in focus wouldn't be a useless feature IMO.

I admittedly don't know all the features of a Canon, but I always keep my camera set so that I can float the point of focus and exposure. it's so easy that even my girlfriend knows how to use it and if somebody else is shooting a photo, all I need to say is "put the square on somebody's face using the adjust pad."
Having used some P&S with face recognition, I find this sorta dubious, and particularly, if you are purchasing a D4 and fail to understand DoF and which subject to choose to focus on, I can't help but saying you should not have bought a D4. If you need face recognition, get a Coolpix. The D4 is specifically designed for professionals. The 1D series hasn't had any of this BS, nor should it. It's a professional series of bodies. Does a Hasselblad H4D-40 have face recognition? No. It' stupid to.
Putting it in a body of that sort adds unnecessary cost and is pointless, IMO. As the earlier joke goes, lets put a fireworks mode on the 5D mkIII ::rolls eyes::
