Yes, a great example of a photographer who creates.

They are a very good way of fostering awareness and appreciation of the different forms of expression photography can accommodate. It can be very liberating artistically to wear somebody else's mask for an hour, a day, or a week.

I've been a Cindy Sherman fan for years. but if we did this one, we'd surely need "Expert" editing.

Too many in the style of's? What are you smoking? We had one for a user at DPC and one for a girl who jumps a lot. Give me a break.

Yeah, we need another what's in your pocket challenge. How about the Lint challenge....
03/20/2012 11:30:28 AM · #10
In the style of someone who disguises herself as someone else.

So does that mean we can take a picture of anyone that doesn't look like Cindy Sherman for this challenge?
03/20/2012 11:53:33 AM · #11
We had a challenge in the style of an Internet fad photographer, just thought this would compliment and inspire a whole bunch of people here, even men.

Technically, her "disguises" seek "to raise challenging and important questions about the role and representation of women in society, the media and the nature of the creation of art. Her photographs include some of the most expensive photographs ever sold." -from wikipedia.

So, since we tend to value popularity and commercial viability, the general dpc'er would love this. Plus there is some gravitas, for the thinking set.

i'm not sure how this "in the style of" would work. as others have said, she disguises herself, so to me her "style" would be

"take a photograph of you (or your model) disguised as someone else. thought provoking composition or setting optional"

how do you do this here, without also including a photo of you or your model without the disguise?

-mefnj

p.s. i am not sure i would agree that there is a big group here at DPC concerned with "commercial" photography. i've sold some prints and some stock photos, but it is by no means how i support myself... i photograph for creative release

I hear you, I am not for the "commercial" side of things either, just like any other challenge it requires a bit of study thought and a tiny amount of

homework. Essentially its a self portrait challenge, with modifications. I guess there is enough opposition by this point to kill it.

any good challenge suggestion will have opposition.

an "in the style of" challenge always works. you look at the photographer's oeuvre and decide for yourself what the style is. if you can't figure it out, then don't play.

that's always true as well. I've skipped several Lint challenges because of that.

I'll get hammered for this but, looking at her stuff, not a big fan. Actually found it to be boring. I also found her work to be pretentious.

Obviously just opinion.

I love in the style of challenges, it is a real challenge for me to first determine what makes their style and also to attempt to execute it.

BUT... What about another Signature Style challenge? Been 2 years since the first one.

Sherman would be a slippery one to attempt to follow stylistically, since her whole concept is looking at how women are depicted. She has shot herself as an ingenue in a Hitchcock film, as a witch in a Renaissance painting, pretty much doing anything she sees that she thinks is important. how do you imitate an imitator? What are the true colors of a chameleon?

The concept of "in the style of" probably came from this suggestion many moons ago. GeneralE was the one who first coined it. In hindsight, I wish we didn't use the phrase because when I suggested that old challenge it had more to do with intent not style. As photographers we strive to create our own style so trying to mimic others is counterproductive, IMO. The real value in these types of challenges is to learn a little history and new insight into other ways of thinking and seeing.

The main thing to get from Cindy's work is not that she liked to dress up, but that she challenged stereotypes. As a voter, if I see an entry that's just about playing dress up expect a low score from me.

Why? Most of her work was done on film, hardly something necessitating Expert rules.

But playing dress up is part of playing a role. And that's exactly what Sherman did for her "Untitled Movie Stills".

It would at least make the challenge interesting...
