For all of you Pinheads, it's that time of year again!

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 2012 Sunday April 29th.

I would like to use it to kick off a month long side challenge of digital and analog pinhole photography. You absolutely do not need to post daily. If there is enough interest, I'll start an image thread on the 29th. Your first submission should be a single image made on the 29th. Don't forget to submit it hereas well.

Zoneplates, and any other lensless contraptions are welcome.

Would this qualify?
I will try to see if I can remove the glass and get it down to just the aperture and still get an image at f32.

Okay...I ordered the little cap thingy from the Lenox company for Nikon. Of course, I know absolutely nothing about this type of photography...::squeak of fright::

Oh...I don't think the cap will arrive by the 29th...I used regular shipping...:-(

Ha! Did that come in a box of Cracker Jacks?

Okay...I tried to read the instructions on how to make one. Apparently, a drill, sandpaper, Nikon cap, and a cola can are required. Did I mention I'm not really all that "handy" or "crafty"?! (Where's bvy when I need him?!!!)

FEDEX is looking good about now or I may just be late for this party...sorry, Ben!

Ben, just the pinhole. bvy is primarily just a metaphysician.

I'm awaiting the arrival of a lensbaby. It won't be here 29th but should be before the month is out.

*** The One Minute DSLR Pinhole ***

Materials needed:
- tinfoil
- scissors
- a needle
- tape (black tape is best)

Instructions:
Remove the lens from your DSLR. Place a piece of tinfoil over the lens opening of your camera, and manipulate it such that it leaves a round impression in the foil. With the needle, poke a hole through the tinfoil right in the center of the lens opening. Don't tear the foil, but make sure the needle goes all the way through. The size of the hole doesn't matter for this project. Remove the foil, and cut around the circle in the tinfoil. Tape the tinfoil circle over the lens opening. Make sure to tape goes all the way around the foil so that light enters the camera only through the pinhole. (Or don't.)

Follow the usual precautions (don't poke a hole in your sensor) and experiment, experiment, experiment.

---

Yes, this is a crude way to make a pinhole, but it will produce results. The point is that this is an art as much as it is a science. You can fuss over material thickness, pinhole shape and size, etc., but it just doesn't take much to get started and get a feel for this. Dive in. And work on perfecting it later. (Or don't.)

Proof of concept to show that I'm not just full of oatmeal. These were made with the One Minute DSLR Pinhole described below.

FWIW, if you go to a craft or fabric shop, ask for beading needles. These are a lot skinnier than a normal needle, and they will make for a smaller pinhole (duh!) which will require a longer exposure and, hopefully, give a softer effect.

I haven't made a pinhole lens yet, but have a bit of info that may be useful. If you need a tiny wire to make the hole, you can take a pair of pliers and pull a bristle out of a wire brush. I use the little bristles when cleaning out tiny ports in air and hydraulic controls, and small engine carbs.

Another tip....

Clean your sensor, or don't.
