In light of Disney taking over the series, I think it would be awesome to have a challenge where we create NEW Star Wars Characters and scenes. I'm fairly certain we have had a Star Wars challenge before, but this one would be unique because the characters and scenes must be new. You can draw inspiration from the family tree, there are five characters that never appeared in the first six movies, or you could just create a completely new character.

Your character could be anything from a robot, to an alien, to a new emperor... Take your pick. You could create a scene with multiple new characters.

Or you could draw inspiration from the new so-called movie poster...

So the challenge would be this: New Star Wars: Create a new character or new scene with multiple new characters that could be part of the next movie. DO NOT use characters or scenes from the previous movies.

Expert editing to make this really interesting... There are many ways to go with this, some even really comical. I would love to see what the minds of DPC could unleash on the mouse...

I love Star Wars. Many of my fondest childhood movie memories revolve around Star Wars. I remember seeing the original Star Wars in a theater when I was 8 and being totally entranced. Then a few years later, waiting in line for the premiere of The Empire Strikes Back. I was let down by the prequel trilogy (I think JarJar Binks pushed me over the edge). Given Disney's track record, I'm adopting a wait and see approach to their films. I hope that when I go see it, I feel the same way I did in 1976, but I can't get my hopes up.

same here, my neighbor and I had all the toys ( i wish i still had them...) we would have epic battles.

i'll never forget the scene in Empire where Vader has his mask off briefly and you catch a glimpse of his face.

I do not have high hopes for the Disney versions.

I like this idea for a challenge - especially with the restrictions of not showing existing characters or scenes (although, going outside the scope of the movies' time frame might be OK for an existing character - example, a grandmother Leia or a child Obi-Wan).

This would be fun.

For Star Wars fans Wired magazine had a cover article last month advising Disney on 74 things every great star wars movie needs. The picture for needed thing # 3 Amputations is worth a look all by itself, but the photography that goes with the article is great. Required thing #19 Choking is also a favorite.

ironically, admiral motti, the first victim of "vadering", passed away this week.

I'm not old enough to share the theater experiences for the originals. My first memories come from my Aunt's house, where she had this really expensive thing that we couldn't afford at our house called a VCR. The first tapes we went and rented were Temple of Doom and Return of the Jedi. Man those were the days... The second wave in the 90's was pretty good, but like others said, JarJar killed some of it for me. I just hope Disney doesn't butcher it, that's why this would be a good challenge. Let's give them some ideas :)

As much as I'll agree that Jar Jar was a horrible character, so was C3PO. Exact same character. Both were created for kids and to cheeseball family movie it up, AKA George Lucas' mission. Surprisingly, the only thing that saved the originals was Lucas' inability to do what he REALLY wanted to...

ETA: I shouldn't derail this, but a frothing at the mouth argument shows how strongly people feel about the topic ;)

why?

Disney has been behind some of the best movies and television of all time. What exactly has Disney got their hands on that they ruined? For instance, Disney owns Marvel and has for years, so all the superhero flicks coming out now, is Disney. Disney also now owns Pixar and did originally i believe.

Can they do more damage that Lucas himself did with the prequels?

Simple, the prequels attempted to make SW as mainstream as possible with the cast of characters, the production etc. Star Wars for me was always a trilogy that was edgy, dark and sinister. This disappeared with the prequels when it became about flash. I do not see Disney returning to the more "dark" interpretation, but rather continuing with a mass-appeal blockbuster.

This is fine, its business after all, but I feel like the original "flavor" of SW has been lost.

No, C3PO was half of one of the key relationships between two characters throughout the films. His relationship with R2D2 is the strongest partnership in the whole film series, Han and Chewie would be second. They bicker like an old married couple, but they're always looking out for each other. There is a lot of substance there that is completely absent with JarJar.

He might be talking about the direction taken with 3P0 in the prequels, where he became utterly slapstick and increasingly pointless.

With the new movie slated for a November release, I figured I'd bump this old suggestion up... Anyone else interested?
