Heh...

This probably won't get much love, but it's a photo I really like.

I'm waiting for the arty votes, don't think the majority see what I see in my image, either that or they are voting blind!,lol

When I looked through last month's photos I couldn't see anything I felt suited to Free Study and nearly didn't enter for the first time in over a year. I toyed with the idea of entering a photo that I was sure would do really badly, and eventually decided to take a chance with it. When I logged in I felt I would be lucky to see a score in the 4's. Imagine my surprise to find this:

Surprised - heh, well the roller-coaster is just starting so can't take much stock in the number right now.

i should have prefaced i'm done actively entering. My entry got glowing reviews on another site but here its a sub 5. That's the trend I've noticed here, i have no urge to share any of my work here. I dont really care to show my work where its unappreciated.

Its a shame to because i like it here, i just care to waste my efforts where they dont matter.

didn't have much to choose from this month so the meh score was expected.
did get a really nice comment though

yes know exactly how you feel, still one of the reasons I said for me returning was to not worry about the scores, but it does still gripe somewhat when your really in love with an image and others don't feel the same. I get over it so all's good.

its not that, my style and types of images dont really resonate with DPC and I cant enter my best ones because they violate some ruleset, so why bother entering at all?

I feel so pigeon holed when i set out to create an image to enter that i dont even bother, i get much more satisfaction out of doing and editing to my liking not some contrived ruleset someone made up for he sake of fairness.

I'm not going to change just to get better scores, I'd rather not play. i also dont vote anymore either, i see all these images with so much potential that are held back because they arent allowed to be better.

its frustrating.

This site is trying to keep everything so fair that everyone can play. When people are ready to break out, they dont wish to play any longer, so we get stuck with mediocrity or the same stuff from the same people who have figured out how to play the game.

it would be so nice in a free study to just be able to enter out best work, i hate showing off second rate material.

I usually enter what I love, it's not always my best work, so I guess I have to take the low votes as they come!

Hence the challenge. I actually prefer Basic and Minimal Editing because it's so much more difficult to work within those constraints that you have to try harder and be more careful with planning.

i'm tired of hearing that argument. changing ones style to get better votes isn't a challenge, its a compromise.

i'd much rather have that expert freedom in the freestudy, since they arent really challenges.

everyone is so afraid of "digital art" when in reality we only have a few here who choose that style.

The whole point of DPC is to get you OUT of that comfort zone. When your "style" is reliant upon a particular editing technique, then you effectively shut out any prospect for growth by trying new and different approaches... and you're left with lamenting how something else doesn't change to suit you.

I tend to agree with Calvert here.. this is a Photography site really and not a 'look what I can do in Photoshop' site, YES digital art does have its place but so does 'real' Photography too and IMO it takes precedence over a persons ability to create 'art' from a series of average photographs. I think the Free Study should be Basic or Minimal editing so we can see the Photographers eye. My opinion only of cause.

Only when one is constrained by time, tools and/or resources can you truly measure one's creativity.

Otherwise there is always an excuse for failure. "I didn't have the right lens, or the right software, or the time wasn't right, or a good tripod, . . . "

Limit yourself and still knock one out of the park and then you've impressed.
