I use wordpress for my website and find it thoroughly frustrating sometimes.

Anyone else have problems with deleting images and then having them still show up as white blank boxes?

I've tried to get help but it takes about 3 days, and by then it's too late. If I have people going to my website I don't want it filled with white boxes.

i know what you mean about wordpress; it took me years to get comfortable with it.

one thing i've found is that when you have problems, it's typically something to do with your theme, or it's due to something done by your web designer (or the person who set up your site). wordpress itself does a really good job of housekeeping, and if a theme is set up correctly, your pages should immediately reflect additions, changes, and deletions to your media library.

if something looks like what you're describing, you should force a refresh on your machine (ctrl-F5), as well as try to view the page from a different machine, just to make sure what you're seeing is what everyone else is seeing.

when you say you've "tried to get help, but it takes about 3 days", do you mean help from your designer, your theme vendor, or from wordpress.org forums? if you're not getting help from someone you've paid money to, you really need to start yanking their chain, or find another vendor.

you might want to arrange testing with someone else. drop some photos into your misc gallery, get them to view it, then take them out and get them to tell you what they see as a result.

also, not trying to spend your money for you, but you might want to consider juicebox as a replacement for nextgen gallery. it is so much cleaner and faster than ngg.

good luck!

Word press takes about 3 days to get back to me.

It's fixed now, it kind of fixes itself strangely, the white boxes were up all night, and up until I wrote this, then I just checked it again, just then and it's gone. I had previously refreshed and cleared the cache already 3 times before that.

Thanks anyway.

Skip, you are always a source of such helpful stuff. I know my current site is not responsive and thus not optimal, so I'm looking for an easier design system. To the OP, yes, the themes are cumbersome and not terribly intuitive

Also sometimes the photos get placed in the wrong order, i don't know if it has anything to do with the name I give them; ie if i give the photo the title, 'a' and I previously had another photo titled 'a' but deleted it, it might take the place of that one.

yes and + 1 for that, I can always trust Skip to come to my rescue, when no one else does :)

I code my personal websites and code a couple other business sites. Find it ore unique than template based wordpress crap. If you are going to use a Template based system I would suggest Joomla. If you can learn basic html code and have your own host. Use Zen photos for your gallery. It is PHP based so you will have to know a little if you want to customize, but out of the box works for most and it is free.

yawn...

you always bang on wordpress, but the only alternatives you offer involve becoming a programmer and coding your own site. nothing wrong with that, if you're so inclined, but most people are not. as i said, it takes time to get comfortable with the whole wordpress thing, but playing with themes and learning the dashboard is a helluva lot easier for most than learning html, css, and php - and, if you do make the effort to learn how to work with wordpress and theme configurating, you can wind up with some pretty spiffy, responsive sites.

@tangy & anita: thanks! and anita, unfortunately, i think wordpress has evolved to the point that you get better, quicker support through a paid vendor than what you can get through the free forum. time was that the scope of what it did and what people used it for was so narrow that the forum was "the place" most users hung out and where you could count on getting decent responses quickly. as it grew and people figured out how to monetize it, well, the free ain't what it used to be.

I agree with Skip, once a user knows how to use wordpress it is a piece of cake. I have an example of my aunt she is over 60 and running a website for a non profit organization and she is maintaining the website by her-self to the best she can without knowing the html or css or javascripts etc, I just had to show her how to use it and what all places she can go and what all she can do. here is the work

Looking at sites at the moment. Wordpress seems to be the recommended one on a couple of sites listing their pro's and con's.

I'd happily just chug along with Facebook but if you aren't a Facebook member you can't view my business site so a real SITE is preferable.

Anyone still using Wordpress or have you moved on to others

Anita, are you happier with the site now?

Thoughts everyone and anyone?

Thanks

Oh ... and do I need to pay for a host site also or just go the all free route (not really up with this talk so hope that makes sense_.

I've been using Wordpress for a while and don't have any complaints. It's pretty intuitive and If you run into trouble there are plenty of instructional YouTube videos. My needs are very basic since I don't do commerce. I just wanted a non cluttered way of sharing my photographs.

My humble site: hofoster.com

I use HostGator for my web hosting. They seemed reasonable back when I was shopping around. Wordpress is free but some plugins and themes will cost you.

Take your time and decide what will work best for you.

What is the issue? PM me and I can help.

No issue at the moment. Considering having a website and saw this old post. It seems to be a recommended site but thought others would chime in.

while there are a few here that would completely advise you away from it,

i'm not one of them. i've been using wordpress for a long time and have found it to be very stable, secure, and highly customizable. (as with anything, you either have to take it as it is, customize it yourself, or pay someone to do the work for you.)

Since I am a techy person for me to working with Wordpress was not an issue as first and foremost it is free and can host to very cheap where as other know site providers like wix, Squarespace, SmugMug etcs comes out expensive though you dont have to worry about the management or technical aspects. Also when it comes to wordpress you will have to take care of SEO and security where as with known you dont know have. I know you didn't ask for all these but thought to share a few cents on this :)

Check out Wix, I believe there's a free option (although it does have some advertisements), but some of the paid subscriptions are really inexpensive. I've been looking at them and so far have been impressed by the number of template options available plus the ability to customise so much of the layout and content

ETA, with Wix you wouldn't need to have a separate host

Not just WIX but none of the paid/free with ad options needs to have hosting except register your own domain.

Reviving an old thread - but have a few related questions.
What do people use to display their own photography ( not necessarily professional) ?
I have use Wordpress for a technolgy website ( ok - I can manage) but haven’t really thought it appropriate for a photographic website.
I have also used Google sites for an educational website . But both I feel don’t really do justice to photos.
Do people keep a photographic website that isn’t professional ( just to display their own work) ? If so what do you use ?
