News at 11!

Langdon's just told us he's implementing a monthly Expert Editing Free Study starting the 15th of this month. The challenge will roll over at 12:00 on the night of the 14 February, and the next challenge will then roll in. So we'll have a whole month to shoot and construct, and will be limited in subject only by our imaginations. This is planned to be a continuing feature, as long as the response/participation warrants it.

And all I have to say to that is "Hurray, Langdon!"

An archaic form of "hurrah!"

Ian Mcshane used to day it a whole bunch on Deadwood.

The real question is whether this will be a fantasy challenge or just simply another free study. In fact, why not simply just open up the regular free study to expert editing and save us the extra challenge?

- is it because we fear that somewhere inside the notion exists that expert editing challenges are more worthy because of the extra work that goes into it rather than just facing a nice landscape and pressing the trigger? I think that the most subtle of entries might do well against "the flaming wing, hole in the body, allegory laden masterpieces."

I mean, assuming that you can compare art from different categories in the same contest... can you?

It's not just wings and flames it could be as simple as cloning out a major element to make your image really pop.

I think this is one of the better things to happen at DPC in a while.

That really is my point. It's been a lot of discussion for a long time about expert editing used in a context that you never would know that photo has been expert edited. So my point is, is this just going to create a fantasy challenge, or, and expert edited challenge that's not fantasy but regular landscapes and portraits and things like that with all the benefits of using expert editing to remove or add elements in a very subtle way.

I guess we'll find out.
I assume we'll get a mix of everything.
