Hey all. I was wondering if anyone was going to get the ball running on another Big Month of bird photography and then I noticed that Derek ( spiritualspatula) appears to be no longer around. I really enjoyed this last year, particularly since it helped me get out of a month long funk after a run in with the cops for photographing while being a middle aged white man.

As with Big Month IV, the goal of this side challenge is to photograph as many separate species of bird possible between April 1st-30th. Last year I did it solely from my back deck, but this year I suspect I'll be wandering around as well.

Participants are encouraged to help others with ID, beginners and professionals appreciated, you'll never believe how many species live around you until you try this challenge out. Sign up here, the posting thread will be created just before April 1st. Side challenge runs for the full duration of April. Aim for pics that can be used to accurately ID the species. And in regard to the identification; make an attempt yourself if possible. If you have no clue but think it's a new one for you, go ahead and post as an unidentified and our fellow bird folk will try to help out. Likewise if you think you see a discrepancy in identification, kindly point it out and we'll get it figured out amongst the crowd. Many birds look drastically different depending upon gender, age, condition, or even region, so don't feel bad if you get some accidental duplicates.

I didn't get into it last year - but I'll definitely try for 2016 - gives me an excuse to go to the ocean!

Good to know - I just didn't see a Big Month and then looked at his challenge entries and hadn't seen anything entered this year.

Ok, I'm in.

I'll have a go. (Even though many of my bird shots end up blank sky.)

Not a big flock. Any more takers? I'll get a thread set up on Thursday. Just got a Sigma 150-600mm Sport (beastly heavy) so I'm looking forward to testing it out.

You can put me on the list Jake, but no promises on posting anything consistently. I took my vacation in March, now in April, I have to pay penance for taking that time off!

I don't know that anyone will be tearing the place up this month (I hope so). I've got 8 days in FL for a wedding and I'd love to think that I'll have time to shoot birds, but it's also my first real vacation in 7 months so I'm looking forward to not having to shoot anything.

I've done the last two years, and had a blast, but won't be able to this year. I'll have very little time. In April, we'll be doing the first of our two moves this year. First to a storage locker and MIL's condo, and then in August to our new house.

I'll try again this year. Been so busy I have not been able to break out the camera much, but this is always a good excuse to do that!

As I said in my original post (and this is drop-dead-serious), the Big Month last year reconnected me with taking pictures after an ugly and senseless run in with local police had me contemplating selling all my gear. If you need an excuse to shoot, this is great. If you like birds but don't know what the heck you're shooting, this is great. Everyone has 2 to 200 birds that come to them on a weekly basis. If they simply crap on your car call yourself a "pooparazzi" and be done with it. ;)

I'll give it go, lens probably not long enough, but will see how I go

I'll give it another go. Not sure how much time I'll have to dedicate to it, but maybe it will force me to get out.

I will try to get in a few. There are a lot of birds nesting in this area now.
It's harvest season here now and I work on machinery and refrigeration, so time will be limited for me to shoot.
