So true. I remember Mona Lisa, my wife wanted to see it. We waited for hours in line, till we arrived in the room where Mona Lisa was hanging in the back. An immense crowd in front.

Hilarious. However, the reality pics are kind of what I would expect...

Ha! They're a bit of an exaggeration... but... yup. Pretty much true for the places I've been.

I did not feel crowded in Italy, but I went November/December

This made me grin
My conclusion is: lower your expectations before visiting a famous place

I laughed. I have actually experienced a few of these - the Mona Lisa, for sure. But others were not my experience - like the Champs de Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower must have been taken during a special event as I've been there numerous times and NEVER seen it like that.

My own list would include some of the opposite - places that surpass your expectations. For me that was the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and rural Switzerland.

We were in the Aegean/Mediterranean for several weeks last year and for the most part we had none of these issues. We were early in the season (mid-April to May) and most places were surprisingly tolerable. Venice was a joy, easy to move around in. Santorini had nothing like the big crush. Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was not especially crowded, and the park area between it and the Blue Mosque was just comfortably peopled.

It's not the crowds that bother me. Just sometimes things don't stand up to their photos. I expected to love stonehenge, and I thought it was a huge let down (and there was no one there...) But maybe because you had to travel so far, stay so long, and stand so far away. It was a "yeah, it looks like the pictures. I'm done. Not much more to see." (and I usually don't get that feeling from things).

Pisa, however, was marvelous. I fell in love and could have stayed there, just staring at the tower alone, for the entire day. There was so many wonderful details, and there was just a great atmosphere about it. The people watching was a hoot. :)
