I don’t get it. To me he results don’t appear to reflect the rules of the challenge.

A flawed photograph to me is one that would otherwise, were it not for the flaw, be a decent shot. The results seem to suggest the opposite, that most people thought it is was the flaw that made the shot and without it the shot would be nothing.

To me the top rated shots were more artistic than flawed in as much as imperfections such as ICM and flare actually improved the image, and not the other way round; an otherwise perfect image ruined by a flaw. I thought they were very nice images, but in the wrong challenge.

To me, the results are all upside down and should be turned on their head to make any sense. Can we do that?

I think you mean the "intention" of the challenge; challenge descriptions are not rules. And no, we can't flip the results, although I wish we could 'cuz I'd go from Brown to Blue :-)

Regarding your premise, I'm not sure it holds water anyway. I don't think it's wrong of people to approach the challenge as being about taking what would *normally* be a flaw and using it to *enhance* their image. It sounds as if you were looking at it the opposite way, that you expected to see otherwise-nice images damaged or even destroyed by their flaws.

I'm with the Big-Bear. The description reads: " show us an image that is interesting because it embraces photographic technical imperfection." That tells me to improve an image with a flaw, not show perfect images ruined by a flaw.

Judging by the top five, looks like lens flare is the favourite flaw of all. Although I don't really think it's a technical flaw as such but using it can make an ordinary image look quite gorgeous. In the case of the challenge entries that did well the flaw added to the image, I'm guessing my flaw didn't add to my image.

Flare is, in terms of photography, a flaw, but surely they often add to the images. I am much more impressed with 3-4 images in the top 10 which show no flaws at all. Problem can be with voters though.

People didn't think there was a flaw with mine, either. But I actually had already designated it as a poor photograph because of the back of the guy taking up 2/3s of the shot.

While I agree there are a few in the top 10 that really aren't flawed. I believe that the vast majority of those would be considered flawed by the vast majority of people. The good thing is that we, as photographers, either know how to work with flaws or know when they really don't get in the way or can even enhance a photo.

I think the second place, in particular, is an excellent example of something that would be passed over by most people because it's not technically perfect. But I gave it a 10. And I'm embarrassed to say that It may have been a 5 or 6 in another challenge.

Good for this challenge for letting us look a little deeper. While I don't know if my scored lower because it was flawed, or because it wasn't flawed enough, commenting on others gave me another lesson. It wasn't hard to figure out what I liked. But actually commenting brought out so many other unexpected things. I wish I would have had the time to comment on them all. I just ran myself short.

Well done, everyone.

I'm pleased as punch that I finally got my second Brown Ribbon :-) And it was a serious entry, BTW, in the sense that A: I love the picture, and B: it's flawed up the wazoo. That's a seriously (and accidentally) underexposed flock of seagulls in a beachside parking lot very late in the afternoon from a moving car. It was an accidental exposure whilst trying to dial in a manual exposure-and-focus to shoot the bloody things taking off as we chased them down, but it was bitter cold and they didn't want to fly :-)

you chased them down? in an AUTOMOBILE?

Jejeje® Paralleled them and got close, usually they take off en masse when you do that. A lot of times gull-spooking is unavoidable when you enter a beach parking lot here in the winter. They drop clams to break 'em, they congregate on the ground. They don't move far when they don't want to. Very savvy customers :-)
