Given that the top finisher in the current challenge has an Image ID# 1179865 I'm concerned that there is a considerable gap in your data pool -- whether or not it's meaningful depends on the source(s).
05/02/2016 06:14:29 PM · #4
Hi Paul ( GeneralE)

I don't know how their ImageID system works. I iterated through all image ID's, starting at 1. What I got was:

Lowest ID: 53, Date : Jan 15, 2002
Highest ID: 1180549, Date: May 2, 2016

So yes, there are many gaps in the numbering, but that may be due to various reasons. As an example of missing numbers, please try and find images between the following numbers:

1050469 and 1050476 (i.e 1050470, 1050471 etc)

I didn't think that many images had been deleted, but I guess it's possible. Another possibility is that images in members' "Workshop" folder are hidden from normal image searches on the site (although they will display normally if specifically linked-to), so it's possible you couldn't access those, which is probably just as well ...

nice work, would be cool to see this from a shortened time period, the site was definitely busier with more participation years ago and that skews the data to that time period. I'd be curious to see a more current last couple of years to see the current population. Great work love seeing the numbers.

WOW What work and it is very interesting, but no Pentax is mentioned.. too bad, Love mine and love being in the black sheep grey areas :-)

Loved seeing the different lenses being used though very interesting

wkruger, thank you so much for the statistics. I have wondered about this myself and now I have the answer. I will print this off and save for my own data. Great Job. We appreciate your work on this. Now the next question I would like to know is why each one was chose. For myself, I started with the Canon G3 as my first digital, years ago when I switched from my Pentex 35mm. I loved it so much and it seams when you learn digital on a certain brand its just easier to stay with the same brand because they virtually work with the same dials even as they advance its just easier to understand. Thank you once again.

Yes this is hugely relevant. Also consider that entering camera and lens data is optional now, and earlier, your default equipment would be automatically listed, unless you manually changed it.

Glad you appreciate it ! When I'm home tonight I will re-run the analysis for a shorter time period. Maybe the last 5 years ?

I think you may have answered the question, "Does equipment matter?"

What does the data say?

The vast majority of Camera/Lens combinations in the Top 10, Top 3, and Winner categories are Canon full-frame cameras with an L series lens.

In the highest average camera/lens category, there is an even split between Nikon and Canon cameras, with Sigma lenses in two of the spots.

In the highest average lens category, there is a variety of lenses (notably Tamron joins the list), but again, all the Canon lenses are L series.

On the missing numbers, I think the system burns a number for each upload attempt - so if the picture is too big for a challenge, or if the connection gets dropped, or ... - the number is skipped. Add to that the deleted entries, and I'm not surprised at the counter vs. images numbers discrepancy. Also, for images just uploaded to the workshop, the site membership structure encourages deletion of no-longer-needed images due to storage size limits.

Thanks wkruger for your work on this. It is a good example of the value of Data Analysis on larger samples. I too am curious about what difference there is between the entire history and just the past 5 years (or whatever you go with).

That doesn't really answer that question though. I would expect more experienced photographers to do better in competitions (on average) and I would also expect that they spend more on their equipment. Correlation not causation.

If I had a Canon full frame camera with an L series lens in my hands, I would still be shooting the same soft focus shots as I always do. But it's interesting that the people who buy the most popular camera also take the most popular shots.

if you invest in a full frame camera and high end glass it usually means you to take the craft more seriously, thus you take better pictures.

I wonder how the statistics would stack up if the window was narrowed to say the last 12, 18, or even 24 months? Has there been a shift in gear being used more frequently? What are the up/down trends of equipment by newly registered DPChallenge users?

Curious about some base stats on cameras for the top brands I looked at the equipment page.

Top brands by number of models in the database (doesn't say much perhaps except for that brands ability to pump out new product).

Sony - 262
Canon - 236
Olympus - 204
Nikon - 149

Not quite certain what the newer models are for the various brands so I sorted them by Megapixel count. First pass I used was 24 Megapixels or more. Canon was lightly represented in that view so I switched to include 20 Megapixels or more. Screengrabs as follows ...

24 Megapixel Plus

20 Megapixel Plus

Nikon did not have any additional actively owned cameras between 20 and 24 Megapixels.

Sorry! I'm sure you take the craft very seriously, Mike. You have one of those serious cameras. I shall revise my thought -- the people who buy the most serious cameras take the most serious shots.

that's not what I'm saying. im only commenting on why the top scoring images seem to favor the "better" cameras by giving offering up a theory on the trend, I apologize if I wasn't clear.

i'm making the point against the notion that better gear takes better pictures, its not the camera per se, its the fact that if you put more money into your gear you are more likely to be more experienced and put more effort into creating better pictures which will likely lead to better photographs. This doesn't just relate to photography by the way, it goes with any craft or skill. People who know what they are doing tend to put more money into their equipment.

Mike does make a good point. Skilled practitioners in anything tend to buy higher-end gear, it goes with the territory. It doesn't mean that everybody who buys a high end set of chisels is a skilled woodcarver, but skilled wood carvers as a group tend to buy better chisels and take good care of them :-)

Well, I get your point, Mike. Of course I do. It's one I've heard expressed before. But it's hard, from my seat in the last row, to accept this often-repeated opinion in silence. My opinion is that it's important to select the best tool for the job and it's risky to assume anything about the photographer based on the camera hanging around his neck. My point was that with any camera & lens in my hand, I am still me, still taking soft-focus shots. I like soft focus shots. I'm a mediocre photographer at best & a camera can't do anything to change that.

I still think it's amusing that photographers spend so much time talking about their gear. They're more like athletes than artists that way. The art & craft of photography is dominated by the camera. It's even difficult to discuss PP because of the sanctity of the shot as captured by the camera & the prevailing opinion that PP is nothing but unethical tricks unless it's used to extend the technical perfection of the camera.

oh well. /rant

I like this rant. Always good to examine suppositions. Not to mention all the dimensions of what it is that we do: gear passion, jeanie on the spot, pp legerdemain, and the confluence of planets.

I must say that it is a totally UNINTERESTING generalization about seriousness and expensive gear making for better photography. I mean that to the extent that it may be true it is uninteresting.

Pretty much exactly what I said two posts before Mike's ;)

Been thinking about it.

Remember when Slippy was doing chainsaw carving? There was a great discussion on which chainsaw Slippy should buy. It should be small & light enough to be comfortably effective as a sculpting tool. There was some discussion about gas powered or electric. Slippy liked gas powered because he liked the noise & planned to work outdoors. Some more discussion about safety gear, as a chainsaw can hurt you. It was generally agreed that Stihl was the well-known brand. Nowhere did anyone say that to be taken seriously as a chainsaw sculptor you had to use a Stihl chainsaw, or any particular brand. When Slippy showed the video of his first chainsaw sculpture, nobody asked about the chainsaw's brand name. They talked about safety.

As an artist in wood, it's most important that the tools fit your hands, that they hold an edge, endure over time, & are comfortable & safe to use. Brand name is not a primary consideration. If you go into the store & ask which chainsaw is the most popular among all the best most serious chainsaw sculptors, they wouldn't know what to say (like they would in a camera store).

/rant

BUT... if you go to a chainsaw sculptors' message board, I bet you'd find endless discussions of same :-)
