I am such a fan of Photographer notes, like Lydia and Wendy and lots of other folks do it. The story behind the image.

We do not do it often enough, and here I include myself.

I got screamed at for my lack of communication on this image, and rightly so.

So here it is.

We visited Ingwelala [part of the greater Kruger National Park area] for the weekend. We had the use of a proper 4*4 game-viewing vehicle, and could drive at any time, morning, noon and night. And boy, did we ever. Morning noon and night. The vehicle, with it's pretty inhabitants, looked like this:

From the first evening drive's first hill, the vehicle seemed sluggish, without power. It's a Landrover, which explains a lot. [Ducking behind a tree, Hehe].

That evening we struggled up embankments and inclines, and made it back to camp about two hours later than planned, because each molehill had to be stormed thrice. We had to sway forward and backwards to keep our upward momentum, and lots of prayers were heard. It was a good thing though, as it resulted in us being next to the road at the place where 2 young lion were marking their new territory, and telling everybody about it. See and hear that story here.

The next two days went by in a flash of protracted sorties into the bush with a supposedly repaired Landy. Saw stuff like this .

We also did the Africa Sundowner thing - very relaxing.

On the last day, we were out on a late afternoon drive, when we surprised this fellow. The exif says focus point is about 4.4m but he was twice that distance from the vehicle, that's why Mr E is not sharp. . He's already starting to move, as can be seen by the dust on his back being shaken off.

Now a surprised ellie is not a happy chap, as one can see here. This is the classic "mock charge" done by elephant in this situation.

The only problem is, there is no real difference in the start and middle part of a "mock" charge and a "real" charge. So here Mr E is still quite intent on not letting his real intentions be guessed at, except that it will end badly if you ignore it.

Now it is close to crunch time, Sir Elephant is 4m from the vehicle and still communicating directly with us, but like good visitors to a wild park, we have unanimously decided via quite clear communication to the driver, to listen to His Lordship and bugger off post haste. But will the Landy go, because if the Landy's engine is in the same state as our legs, we're sitting ducks. A himm and a haa, and we move off at a snail's pace..

And just as quick as you can say "soiled pants" the juvenile delinquent ellie of which we were never afraid, decides that he has created enough room for himself, and crosses the road behind us at a brisk walk.

Just another glorious day in South Africa.

Yay!!Thanks for the story. I love the shot you picked for the challenge, since you can't see what's under you. It almost feels like you've crawled under the landrover! :)

Wendy, I think it's a good sign of recovery that you COULD say that!

Herman, thanks for the notes. Great story.
