A friend of mine asked if this image could be restored. I said it was beyond anything I'd attempt, but I'd post it here and give folks a crack at it. If it can be done decently, there's a little money in it, $30.00 or so. Click to view large image. These are VERY big scans, one in color and the other in grayscale.

Thanks!

I will play with it a bit and let you know. This is the sorta thing that gets a bit tedious.

Which version do they want fixed, and "how much"? The only really hard part is cloning out the tape marks, other than that it's mainly boosting contrast and sharpening, no?

Either version, I will deal with adding/removing sepia when it is fixed. We didn't know if it would be easier to do in the color or B/W scan so scanned it both ways. "How much" fixing? I don't know what's possible, realistically. But it's not just the tape, for sure, there are whole white areas where the emulsion is missing from the print, and scratches and folds and such. It's a real mess.

Well I don't want to have 2 ppl doing it ...
But I will post my progress in a few minutes since I have a little time to play (slow at work).

Actually, competition would be GREAT :-) But seriously, once someone's made a start on it and showed good results-to-date, then we can commit to that person...

I'm enamored by the crunchy tape texture.

You go for it -- I'm sure it will be faster/better than if I tackle it with a computer and Photoshop nearly as old as the photo ... :-)

I always worry that i will suddenly get innundated with other stuff - but this is what I have so far ...
Most of the easier parts are what I've done =/

You're doing great so far. The job is yours :-) There's no particular hurry, within reason take your time :-)

You ARE working off the full-size image right?

If I had time I'd spend more time on it, because I love playing with stuff like this.

Here's the easy part. Camera Raw & Nik Dfine 2.0 - five minutes. The rest is all content aware fill and the clone tool. Piece of cake. LOL

OK, 20 more minutes.

Wheel's buggered and I still have some small stuff to fix.

You guys sure have more patience at that stuff than I do :-)

I don't look at it as fixing stuff as much as I look at it as a puzzle that needs answering. Some pieces are easy to put in place, others take time and experimentation. Fixing that wheel is something that I want to do right (I didn't) and know that when I figure it out it'll be in my bag of tricks for when I need it.
