It's a great genre, and I've seen some great images...but...

...I think this is likely to get very few (<20 entries) on DPC.

I think it's a great photographic topic, I love that genre, but like many topics I see suggested, it doesn't take into consideration whether it's likely to generate sufficient participation. Sometimes great topics just aren't accessible to enough people to make a good challenge in our reduced member capacity. It might make a better side challenge thread. It may work as a topical hidden gem challenge, to allow people to dig into the archives. At some point in their history, I presume many more may have dance shots to participate with.

If I find time to look for it, I'll post a link (in the other thread) to a photographer who blew me away with his dance shots. I've always wanted to do it, but there's a matter of resources and time.

Even in the snow covered mountains of Colorado, people dance. It's hard to get them to stop!!!! I think this would be a good topic and would attract good participation.

I intentionally left the interpretation open - so that it could be dancing waters. Or dancing animals, or dancing lights, or....

not crazy about the subject matter - a bit limiting I believe.

I think the majority of voters would consider these to be shoehorns and vote accordingly. I like the topic, but I think a low entry count would be likely. That being said, I am not sure that the potential for that to happen is a good reason to toss out the idea either.

I agree. I don't see why we should eschew all "esoteric" topics out of some idea that universal inclusivity is required of all challenges. Speaking for myself, I certainly don't enter every challenge with the hope of WINNING, I enter them to have fun. And I could enter a photograph of my off-the-wall neighbors dancing in the street and that would be fun :-)

Maybe it makes too much of the "value" of a ribbon or of placing top 10, but I think low entry counts devalues (deflates?) the ribbons from the bigger challenges.

In a 20 entry challenge, half of them are top ten and a quarter of them make the front page. In contrast, people have ribbons in challenges where there are over 800 entries.

I noticed that immediately and thought of how flowers and grasses can look as if they are dancing in a breeze. The only thing that would limit it would be one of those descriptions that add . . . find a person or people moving in such a way as to suggest dance . . . or some such. And I do fear out-of-the box interpretations will not fare as well as photos of people who are clearly dancing . . . but such is life :)

Perhaps the higher likelihood of participants getting recognized at TT or FP could be an incentive. A participant who gets recognized by virtue of fewer participants might be more inclined to keep entering or to enter more often. Might just keep this place alive a bit longer.

On a personal note, one of my earliest "wins" here was non-official bling for an image that hadn't a chance at a score-based ribbon. Sorry if this is off-topic but perhaps we should consider an occasional challenge that excludes members with previous wins or TTs. It might encourage folks to stick around.

How about clarifying the open nature of the challenge? Call it "Dance or Dancelike" or "Rhythmic Motion"

I Knew a Woman
BY THEODORE ROETHKE

I knew a woman, lovely in her bones.
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
Of her choice virtues only gods should speak,
Or English poets who grew up on Greek
(I’d have them sing in chorus, cheek to cheek).

How well her wishes went! She stroked my chin,
She taught me Turn, and Counter-turn, and Stand;
She taught me Touch, that undulant white skin;
I nibbled meekly from her proffered hand;
She was the sickle; I, poor I, the rake,
Coming behind her for her pretty sake
(But what prodigious mowing we did make).

Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose
(She moved in circles, and those circles moved).

Let seed be grass, and grass turn into hay:
I’m martyr to a motion not my own;
What’s freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways).

Yes. Like this, in addition to whatever traditional dance images people choose to do. I'd just like a challenge where people try something beyond the obvious ballerina or stage shots. To seek out the natural "visual motion" of still objects, the rhythm of patterns, the courtship of animals.

Life is a dance. I think that should be the name of the challenge.

Just received a brown for my dance picture...
And now I'm wondering if it would have done better in a "Dance" challenge

And I'm absolutely fine with that.
Maybe this concept would work better for "dance" if it was implemented in a better way
