My niece has asked me to shoot her 3 week old and I think it would be a lot of fun but have never shot babies before. I understand a shot list as used in a wedding, is there anything like this for a baby shoot? Any recommendations on where to go for inspiration?

There are various articles on this at PictureCorrect -- this was a "crude" first search, so you might try narrowing the results with another ...

I strongly suggest you check out YANAP so you can not only see what is usually done, but some of the horrendously bad ideas - either done during the shoot or in pp - all for the sake of getting a cute shot.

I have shot a few and they are sooo fun, I lovee them.. A few learning curves I learned and I wish I knew before shooting were these small things.

It takes time and patience..expect to spend over 2hrs.. mine lasted at least 4hrs.
My biggest learning curve was making sure the room was super warm and cozy.
Make sure there is a space heater and, keep the room at 85/90 degrees.. it may be hot for you, but the baby will be cozy and happy.
Stay away from the frog poses..for me, I just don't find it safe at all, and if you do them wrong your baby will be fussy..
Make sure you also take a change of clothes as well, I have been spit upon LOL!

When the baby is awake, I do the family shots/ sibling shots.. after feeding time when they are content and getting sleepy or are sleeping, that is my macro work time of close ups of hands and feet.
Your a genius at the portrait thing so that will be easy and no tips needed there as far as studio shooting goes, you are so advanced more than I am for that.

Just have a great time and fun! It really is a great experience. There are other tips out there as the bean bags/ pillows ect but I never worried about buying or spending money on them. I love the details newborn shots bring, it the detail stuff I love.. I plan on doing more as well in the future.

I am sure your images will turn out beautiful and very heart warming. Good luck!

As for inspiration and my reccomendations are: Pinterest is filled of ideas and inspiration as well as this website, it was my go-to as well, I am pretty sure you will see your style in a few of those shots.
inspire me baby

Julie gave some great ideas, but as usual be aware of candid shots during transition or after feeding, playing.

Some times you get gems when you don't expect it! Not necessarily what they will appreciate when they are older but still gems.

Most of my newborn shots have been of my grandchildren so time wasn't an issue.

Good luck and most of all have fun.

i can offer some advice for shooting newborns, these are from experience even though I prefer not to shoot newborns.

photoshop - babies don't easily pose, they are flimsy little sacks of meat that fall over easily. be ready to clone out hands and other supports

use a space heater - they get really cranky when they are cold. crank up the heat in the room ahead of time or better have the space heater blow directly on them (don't burn them or start a fire)

feed them first - so they fall asleep.

they piss and shit randomly - just a warning. keep the shoot short, don't press your luck with a long session unless you don't mind cleaning up a mess.
