I have while on this site done my share of commenting from just simply saying that you like about the Image to how you feel how it will appeal. Maybe a tounge in cheek comment. but vaery rarly do I get an acknologment. and One wonders if one is doing the right thing. Any Answers any body.

yes I feel the same thing;/ there are people here that can really help with their comments. But any comments in general I think help, I really enjoy comments in my entries, good or 'bad' comments are always welcomed

I think comments are so important too. It takes discipline and time to really do it well and often there are so many challenges that it is overwhelming.
I often wind up with a 'wow' or 'fabulous' which is not commenting really. Johanna has said that a few people who lead by example can turn things around
and I think that it is worth a 'shot'. I am going to try.

Nick, you have given many more comments than you have received, I see. Keep up the good work. I can't answer your question, though, I don't know.

By acknowledgement do you mean a check that the comment was helpful or do you mean a PM saying the member appreciated your comment? I always check the comment helpful box, rarely write the commenter to thank him or her additionally though I really do appreciate each and every comment whether critical or simply responsive.

You have just encouraged me to write a couple of comments.

I agree with Nikki nam - mostly ticking the helpful box.
If there is a real suggestion for improvement or if the commenter asked a question then I write a message.

Please, please go on making comments, maybe I'm lucky enough to receive one from you!

kiwinick: Back when I registered in 2007, I tried using the comment boxes to reply interactively with those who commented on my images. I quickly learned that the system would include such interactions in the comment count, which seemed to distort the calculations. Also, I found that the DPC culture was not very strong on using comments that way. So I use other methods for interaction. But I do follow the "helpful" count as an indicator that comments I make are appreciated (or at least acknowledged). Your profile shows a Helpful mark for more than 86% of the comments you've made. Seems reasonable to take that as a good signal that your efforts are noticed and appreciated.

We all like to get comments, especially positive ones, but please remember that if you are looking at comments as a learning tool and way to become a "better" photographer, you will benefit far more from the comments you make than from those you receive.

Nick, I am a member since end of Dec 2010 and made over 8000 comments and received 6000
I continue to make comments even if, as it happened for instance in the last FS, I made 33 comments and received none.

Well, I'm not nearly as prolific with comments as I'd like to be. Joined about 6 months before mariuca, but have made 1357 and received 1000. I've marked about 90% as helpful. (Some as noted below were my own comments replying to other comments. Didn't do that for long.)

In my experience, it seems that engagement with other members is relative to your input. I would like more engagement, but frankly, don't have the time to participate in forums and commenting as much as I'd like. I will say that (especially in light of the decline in comments overall) an effective way to create better engagement with other members is through PMs to those whose comments are most encouraging or helpful. I also think that post ranking commenting can be helpful in creating engagement with the community.

There have also been several attempts to encourage members to comment after rollover. Usually it results in a bump of participation for a short time, then a tapering off. Still among the best ways, and most underused IMO, is to forum post requesting comments directly on an image that's not being entered or for an entry after rollover.

And although I've never sent or received something like this... I think you'd get good responses from sending PMs to specific members whose work you admire with links to images, asking specifically for comment or suggestion, or other help in achieving a desired result. I know I'd be more detailed and attentive to a specific request.

I have given 2730 comments and only recieved 903...yes ppl always want them but due to the flack and backlash unless they allow us to see IF and when someone wants a critique or comment, I think that has slowed me down from making any comments, That little box that said do you want critiques or comments should be allowed for everyone to see, not just the critique club.

Due to my time now, my time has been crazy.

I really feel that some people don't understand, when comments are made, sometimes it takes me 5 mintues just to make sure it comes out right..then I spend over an hr commenting on photos . I know the critique club spends way more time commenting and it amazes me.... this is time that those that have made comments will NEVER get back, spending time commenting on images for people that we really don't know.... I am finding my time is more precious that I can be doing other things, I have to really make sure when comments are made that they are appreciated and welcomed.

This year, I am making sure my time and my hours count. So that box will be very crucial if I am to be spending any more time here on this site for commenting on any more images.

So, for those that take time to comment. Thank you for your time and the beautiful comments you have given me. Thank you to the critique club for all of the amazing hard work.

I also agree wtih the others, its the personal contact outside of the challenges and forums that make it worth while to ask or to get in convo with.

Nick -- I have been the recipient of a fair number of comments from you, and I do always appreciate and welcome the feedback. I generally appreciate both positive and critical comments. For critical comments, it is generally interesting to hear how other might have handled things -- even if I don't always agree with them. I don't generally PM someone that leaves a comment unless the comment contains a question. I probably should send more send PMs acknowledging insightful comments.
