Ok. Don't beat me up here. I'm going to use this forum as it's allegedly intended where it states "Discuss challenge results here. Did the winner deserve to win, or did another photograph?"

First - congrats Mike on your 2nd place Red Ribbon for the recent Snapshot challenge. :-)

So, now the conversation part ...

When I was voting on this challenge and this image loaded on my screen I was impressed with the photo. I thought it was creative and very "artsy". This photo is something I'd expect to see in the upcoming 'Art of 2016' challenge. The minimalism, the strategic placement of the road and signs in the composition - those values had me imagining someone staking out the location and purposely capturing this shot. Internally I applauded that.

However, this challenge was 'Snapshot' ... for some reason I envisioned photos that were spur of the moment, perhaps a little sloppy in compositional technique, yet engaging. Not a thought out piece of art. ???

The question; what is a 'Snapshot'?

I can certainly understand your viewpoint. And judging the image from a not-being-in-the-situation, I somewhat agree with you :)

But, knowing the background, I do not. The only planning I did was to throw my camera in the car when I drove my son to the bus stop on a very cold morning (normally we walk). I had no idea if I would even try to take a photo. When we parked the car, I grabbed my camera, jumped out of the car, and took the photo. This happened in the span of less than 30 seconds, due to it being so darn cold. I was just lucky I had it previously set to RAW+JPEG due to the square challenge. I was equally lucky that everything was straight, as it was hard to see through the viewfinder, and I had mere seconds to compose and shoot before the cars crested the hill.

Lesson of the story, not all photos are what they may seem :)

Everyone's definition of a snapshot may vary. However, I think you could argue that this is a snapshot in the sense that he happened to capture this scene on the way to the bus stop with his son. It was sort of a spur of the moment opportunity while on a non-photographic mission to go to the bus stop. In that sense, it may be more of a "snapshot" than my entry. I was out wandering with the express purpose of finding some good "snapshot" opportunities.

I think, even hope, the jury will always be out on this one. Although I suspect that most of my photos are indeed snapshots, taken with minimal aforethought. In fact, my own entry was not even taken for the challenge, but just one of a series of hostage snaps. (hostage to turkey).

giantmike's was a lovely photo, snap or not. as was markwiley's. it is a question of what you are looking for: I was waiting for something to jump up and, well, snap at me.

So true! :-D

I'd wager there are many untold stories lurking within the photos we capture and present here on DPC. ... and I must say "Thank You" for putting the story in the 'Photographers Comments' area of your image. I wish more people would do that (I'm just as guilty).

I took snaphot as in the early 60s box brownie family things a bit hit and miss as it were nothing that was artfully posed

May be we should read the directions for each challenge

When I first saw the image I thought - this is a very good shot, an image with a super mistery atmosphere.

In my opinion it is very far from a snapshot. It doesn't matter how you have taken it because the judgment is for the viewer.
I was afraid of expressing my opinion, I really like Mike, I like his photos and I thought that commenting this thing could be considered as rude.
Since we are discussiong about it in a really polite way I thought I was free to say what I thought. So Mike, take more of your snapshots since they are in my view great works of art :)

... and congrats for the ribbon

My understanding of snapshot was more like a casual shot and not really look for a situation or artistic point but more like just click something. I did get a query for this image and I believe that is because of the tone in the image as the minimal editing in post processing does not allow this and later on it got cleared from the SC :)
