Yesterday, I discovered a Facebook page which was downloading my images, lowering the quality (via JPG compression), reducing the resolution and then re-uploading the images to their page. No permission was granted. Clicking on my image did not return me to my source image, which is how I knew the image had been downloaded to the admin's computer storage. There was no attempt to "share" from my source image, which would have been okay with me. Downloading my copyrighted images, altering them and then re-uploading is theft.

I reported the page to Facebook. I reported the stolen images to Facebook. I sent a message to the admin asking him to remove the images from his FB page. Nothing was done to resolve the problem. The admin (who stole the images) said I should be happy with the free advertising, since he listed my name next to the stolen images. After all, the page has 50,000 likes.

The purpose of this post is to share a solution that worked. I issued a DMCA Notice to Facebook. Within two hours, the admin received a harsh notice from Facebook advising him of his copyright violations. He immediately removed my images. Bottom line: A DMCA notice carries weight with Facebook and probably others.

DMCA Notice Generator This is for web hosts, search engines and other Internet services.

Specifically for Facebook: Reporting a Violation or Infringement of Your Rights

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act - often called 'the DMCA' - is a law which helps copyright holders have their stolen content removed fast. The DMCA Act provides web hosts, search engines and other internet services "safe harbor" from copyright infringement claims. In return, these companies are required to act quickly to remove infringing material when properly notified.

Thanks for the info- out of curiosity, how did you discover the misuse and appropriation?

I accidentally stumbled upon the nefarious Facebook page. I was surprised to find several of my images displayed. A few had been there for a month or more. Clicking on my images did not return me to my source images. My images had been downloaded, altered and re-uploaded. These images were not "shared"... they were stolen. I was very pleased Facebook responded so quickly (2 hours) in removing the images, once they received the properly filed DMCA notice. And, they issued a harsh warning to the FB page admin.
