I love some of the infrared Photography I've seen on here and would love to try my hand at it. I've checked out several places that says you can simulate IR in Photoshop but I don't think it comes close to IR. Has anyone tried the IR lens? I don't have the money to spend on having a camera converted much less buying an IR camera. Does anyone have any suggestions other than I'm SOL? Grin...

You can definitely do some IR work without a conversion... you want an IR filter with a 720nm cut-off, not a "deeper" IR filter, and not a IR/red filter, usually spec'd at 680nm. Your exposure times will be long, but you can definitely get some interesting work done. Take a read through this page. Nice comparison of converted and unconverted cameras with various IR filters, and discussion of the results and issues encountered.

Fritz, thank you for your help. I read the post and it gives me hope. This time of year with all the foliage popping out is my favorite time of year when all the different shades of green are at their peak. After May, most of the green looks the same.

I brought some really, really cheap IR lenses and they work great!!
They are like 3 different kinds and give levels to the IR.. This is just so fun
Warmer weather the better but I have used LR to transfer my IR images. You def want longer exposures for it.

I think it's time for me to dig out my old IR filter and see if I can get decent results on my new camera. I haven't had much luck since my point and shoot days.

Nice. I wish I could find one. Not that I've got money to burn after buying my 80D!

I found some lens that were really inexpensive. I've been experimenting. You may have better luck with your older camera because some of the newer cameras block out the IR rays. I still think I'm gonna get an 80D.

I've just done my first test shots using an IR filter on my Olympus OM-D E-M5 III and it seemed to cope quite well.

This was shot handheld at ISO 3200 on a 17mm f/1.8 lens though, so I fear most shots would probably need a tripod, something I hate using.

Nice result!
Yep, you are definitely struggling to get enough light through the filter, given you had to go to ISO 3200 to get 1/60s. Since you have IBIS on that body, you may find that for still scenes like this you can get away with much slower shutter speeds. At 17mm, with IBIS compensating, you may find that you can get away with shutter speeds of 1/10s or even a bit slower. That might let you get down to an ISO of 400 or so. Shooting a short burst and picking the best shot is a good technique when you are at the shutter speed limit and worried about shake creeping in.

Thanks Fritz. The "normal" shot was very ugly. https://web.facebook.com/photo?fbid=5874266872628895&set=pcb.5874273645961551

I'll try that, though my hands are very shaky. My camera is usually set to auto ISO, so that was my camera's choice, not mine.
