I'll be in the vicinity of San Francisco next week on the 28th and 29th of August for work, but I should have the evenings free to explore. I've not been there before. Other than the Golden Gate bridge, what should I consider visiting with my limited time?

If you haven't had dim sum, find a restaurant in China Town serving it. That's where we feel in love with it.

If you have free time during daylight, then Golden Gate Park, the Camera Obscura (next to the Cliff House), Coit Tower (views and murals inside) are interesting; Fisherman's Wharf is pretty touristy ... a lot of stuff probably wouldn't be open in the evenings: California Academy of Sciences, Maritime Museum, etc. I'm not that up on SF nightlife, but one of the hotels on Nob Hill has glass-sided exterior elevators which give you an interesting photo-op, as do the interior elevators in the lobby of Hyatt Regency at the foot of Market Street. There are ferries and tour boats -- you can have dinner on the water if you're into that sort of thing ...

ETA: What is "the vicinity"? There may be something outside of SF proper you could check out ...

It might not fit within your schedule - but a sunset tour of Alcatraz would be both interesting and provide some nice photographic opportunities if you are looking for that.

I did think of that, I'll have to check their schedule. I did decide that on at least one evening I will head out to the area of the Golden Gate bridge and the Presidio. Looks like a lot of great photo opportunities within a modest walking distance.

Across the Golden gate looking back is really quite nice. If you have a foggy morning, golden gate in the fog is really quite cool. The sea lions are really Stinky. :)

From Hayward it's a short (though not necessarily quick) drive up to downtown Oakland, where you can visit the first wildlife sanctuary in the country at Lake Merritt any time for free.

Lake Merritt Bird Sanctuary

Cross the GG Bridge and go up into the Headlands to the left on the Marin County side. Great place to be in late afternoon/early evening for bridge and city shots. Cool old WWII defensive bunkers/batteries up there also. Battery Spencer is one, quite near the bridge. Battery Mendell is clear out on the western headland, as is Point Bonita light. If you have time to drive out there it's beautiful, rugged headlands above the Pacific, military property so no development to speak of, just old clapboard military stuff.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. That lighthouse looks very interesting.
