In Central Florida they only evacuate mobile/moduler homes - on the coast/barrier islands, lakefront or home built before 1992 (Hurricane Andrew) you should evacuate...I have no water around me or close, our house is much higher (3') than the average house that's built on a slab (about 6" above ground). For us it's never been a thought to leave. We used to have trees (just had 20 stumps ground out....can you say chhhha Ching!!!)...so even trees aren't a threat.

We're not stupid for staying...but we are very, very careful. We won't leave our property until all curfews are lifted (roads are cleared)

We haven't heard from Waddy Thompson ( melonmusketeer).
He may have headed for safer territory...let's hope so.
I think he's located down in the Keys.

I've talked to him today. He's still working on securing things and has a safe house to go through. He lives in Immokalee, FL it's due east of Fort Myers. Right where the eye will go...I offered for him to come up here but he is a 5th/6th generation Floridian!! I think this isn't my first rodeo...he's written the manual!!!

I'm praying for all of you Floridians.

It won't be fun.

But, I understand the no evacuation thing...

When we lived in FL (for twelve years)... there were so many hurricanes... and it came to become a time for get-togethers... partay!

The last one we went through was... the third in a string in a couple of weeks.

Hubby took our eldest son out (with helmets on) to film the hurricane hitting our orchid houses/business.

It ruined them...

The houses... not the guys.

I understand how one gets like... "I've seen this before... It's nothing..."

But... Irma... is huge.

She needs to lose a bunch of weight if I were gonna stick her out in a water-related area.

Stay safe, folks!

Still have power here. Couple bands have come through that felt like a truck came trough. But so far so good here. Pup is getting a little nervous but other than that all is well.

Will keep you updated as I can.

Wrap a cloth... tightly around pup's middle? It seems to comfort them.

We've tried the vest before. Sadly she is just crazy nervous about anything. So the vest only made her more nervous.

Well we're as ready as we're gonna get...did my final cleaning (Rick said everything was quite sparkly...should make it easier to find!!! Lol)

Got my final shower for awhile (ugh) as we'll lose power then water. Everything is cleaned, sorted, rearranged, tubs filled....water buckets ready. The hardest thing for me will be no A/C for 1 week or more...

We live in a higher area than most. Our garage may flood but outrage house is built up 3 cinder blocks. Water hasn't ever gotten even close to that...if I lived on the coast/lakefront - I'd be gone!!

Send good vibes, say a little prayer for us. I'll ck in when I can.

Sounds like you're experienced and prepared, no a/c is yuky for sure. Sending good vibes prayers for Florida.

Yaaaaa...noooo. Rick says we won't get one for 1 time use in 13ish years. I work with a friend who didn't run his every 1-2 months. He tried to start it...nope. Rebuilt the carbonater but later found out the gas was contaminated...mind you WE know how to maintain the generator. This is just an example.

Most people in the north do not have a generator for winter blizzards...

Once we get past this I know several people that have generators...I'll be asking to borrow/rent theirs!!! I just know we'll be later in the power restoration because we don't live near (and in this order) Fires Station/Hospital/Nursing Home/School...they are priority... also several friends have offered to have us come stay with them - but that's after the storm...

They make small ones you know. :-) Couple hundred bucks. Use for other things besides emergencies. Just saying ...

We got tired of losing power at least a couple times a year (for a handful of hours each time) in addition to a big outage every couple of years (like no power for a couple of days type thing), so we had our breaker boxes wired for plugging in a generator. We've had to use it probably a dozen times over the past 4 or 5 years. Have a 8500 watt portable generator that we plug in. I use the generator for other things around here a few times a year (power tools to repair the fence, etc...).

Anyways ... glad you're still online now. The news is reporting power outages in Florida happening now already.

Be safe! TTYL

People are freaking nuts!!!

Many of you know that I'm a hair dresser - this morning I got a call they (not a current client) were asking if we were open!!! People are bat shit crazy...REALLY!!!

Maybe I could hand them the shampoo & conditioner and tell them to step out side....ugh!!!

I think that wild, teased look went out of fashion after the '70s, though I've always heard that rinsing with rain-water was good for the hair ... :-)

Still quiet but squalls are passing through. It's only to Naples right now...a slow mother of a storm!!!

So here's how I role with the tide..😉

Made shepards pie, turkey pot pie and roasted beet salad w/herb goat cheese. (Remember we can a camper to cook in later)

At least we won't get hungry!!!

Then someone posted this on FB...

The power company says that they expect 80% of Orlando to be without electric for up to 10 days. We need deodorant, not food!!!

If you saved the turkey fat, use that in lieu of deodorant; you'll smell just as much, but it'll be a yummy smell :-) (runs for shelter)

On a less frivolous note, current projections have Jose targeting Cape Cod a day after we return from holiday :-(

On that same note, Bear, you just might want to prolong that holiday another week or two?

This happens because of the counter-clockwise rotation of the storm winds, which (in this location) are off-shore while the storm is to the south, but after the eye passes northward the winds will be on-shore, and will push all that water (plus more) back in.

Penny says, rather emphatically, "No!". I believe her theory is if the shingles start flying she wants to be on salvage duty.

Irma's had a change of heart and is headed for Missouri. It doesn't seem like she'll be doing much in New England.
