You know, at least he wasn't shot because the cop thought he was taking pictures ... (he says) ... :-(

Good Grief...

And Neil, I imagine bracing against a tree with a 600mm lens might look even MORE like a sniper :-(

The same thing almost happened to me as I was out unloading my tripod. Except I wan't being pulled over, there was no cop - or anyone for that matter - and I didn't get shot. I did pinch my finger in the tripod legs, though.

In all seriousness, I saw this story earlier and had the universal WTF?!! reaction. Cop starts firing as he opens the door. I'm not anti-cop, but what the hell has happened to training, vetting, reviewing, etc. in our police forces??? Another question, has there really even been an increase in these types of trigger-happy cop incidents or has the proliferation of video cameras just exposed what was previously covered up?

So easy to mix up the two, right?

At least he lived to talk about it...and doesn't hold a grudge. He doesn't want the person fired (or harassed, of course).

On a lighter side note, photography is of course rooted in violence, at least the terminology. We

- shoot people
- spray and pray
- blow up prints
- shoot with a Canon
- Eliminate distracting tourists
- burn areas of our prints

..anything else?

More seriously, we (at least I) have to stop using the word "Shoot" for photograph. I had someone look at me the other day when I said I went out shooting to ask me exactly what I meant.

I have a gut feel that this isn't the case. The extent of of militarization of the police nationwide over the past few decades is just frightening. We just had a shooting here in Milwaukee where a resident in an area with a lot of violent crime tried to scare off some individuals involved in an altercation outside his home by firing shots into the air. He was legally blind. Unfortunately, police responding to the altercation arrived at that moment, and shot him, killing him, without attempting to disarm him. I believe that law enforcement personnel have been so sensitized to the (real) risks of firearms in the community that their response tends to be "shoot first and ask questions later."

And to a certain extent, I can't blame them.

There was just a shooting about three blocks from my home. In broad daylight. On a semi-crowded street.

If I was a cop and had to show up for that, I'd want serious weaponry, protection, and support.

A witness said he counted 18 shots. The shooter emptied a semi-auto pistol.

I am a gun owner, and I believe in gun rights to an extent, but it's getting scary.

Well certainly a "shots fired" type of call would warrant extreme measures, but I think we are talking about incidents of completely unnecessary shootings by police - of which there are many - in which the "suspect" was either not armed or ultimately was mistaken as a threat. Personally, I suspect cops have gotten away with a lot more "mistakes" before the video cams.

Eek. A few times, when Red and I were shooting wildlife at waterside parks in Ottawa, people would sometimes mistake the tripods being carried by us as guns. SOme would even tell us outright, if they didn't exclaim aloud as we strode by. Especially if we had camo netting with us too!!!! Good thing we're in Canada and the general populace is strongly discouraged from carrying sidearms.
