The former first-place image in the "Lens Effects" challenge has been disqualified because the submitted image was half-a-stop lighter than the unaltered JPG. This may have happened in-camera, but the EXIF data do show that it happened post-exposure, and that's a DQ. Congrats to our new ribboner and HM.

You mention on the other photo that was DQed as being "self reported". Not sure I would count someone admitting a mistake after being asked to show proof as self reported.

When you are asked for proof and you go to provide it and discover yourself that the original EXIF had been altered by your workflow / transfer, etc. and you tell SC that you screwed up without realizing it, that is essentially self-reporting. Not that there is any difference between self-reporting and "getting caught" that I am aware of except maybe pre-rollover. Could be wrong, though.

while there is no difference I still don't believe it should be called self reported. it would be the same as telling a police officer you are drunk and what your exact bac is when he ask you to take breathalyzer. now, pulling up to a police officer to tell him you are driving drunk would be self reporting.

Sometimes people independently discover they made a mistake and report it before we even ask for an original.

Sometimes people only discover or realize their mistake when going back for the original requested.

It's worth noting but it doesn't change the nature of the DQ and any multiple DQ penalties that would be assigned. Also, in this particular case, it explains why we didn't even have to wait for the original to do the DQ.

This is pretty much a semantic argument. We have nothing more convenient to call it, and we DO appreciate when people tell us they goofed and there's a problem. It doesn't lessen the "punishment" or anything like that, but it's always nice NOT to have to tell someone "DUDE! You messed up!"; we hate having to do that, we really do. It's my sense of it that nearly every DQ is a result of a "Duh!" moment on the submitter's part. Very seldom do we see a case where it's obvious someone was trying to "cheat"...

ETA: crossed with Neil :-)

That's too bad because that was a spectacular image.

When you compare a DQ to a DUI, it's time to step away from the internet. ;-)

All I can say is Doh!

I should know better... My Lightroom Workflow appears to have bumped the exposure (Auto-toned perhaps) - I only noticed when I dug around for the original .JPG that the challenge entry was around 1/2 stop lighter
than the original... I actually prefer the original more moody/gloomy JPG which I have referenced below...

The Sight Council helpfully advised to keep JPG straight from card in future minimal entries to be 100% sure... which is good advice to all...

Sorry to hear of the dq. It was the best black and white. I used JPEG as well, but what happens if you shoot in a RAW? Doesn't the conversion do things to the image? Just curious.

@JunieMoon - I don't think you could shoot a minimal editing challenge in RAW as RAW needs to be edited in post. The Rules are reasonably clear and the advice that the SC gave me (after issue identified) was to keep the JPG straight from the card and therefore avoid importing/exporting through tools such as Photoshop or Lightroom...

Most folks dislike 'minimal' challenges (as do I) but for a lens effects challenge it felt right to ensure all effects, blurring etc. would have to be as shot and not introduced.

To the powers that be: I didn't receive an email for this proof request. I only saw it because I logged on. Is it possible that the email notifications aren't working if the request is sent out later? Did you receive an email, Barry? (sorry for the DQ!)

I haven't received proof requests by email for many years. I can only go with what appears on my front page. No one has been able to figure out why.

If you are having problems receiving notifications it's usually one of two problems: either your provider is blocking or diverting the messages to SPAM, or the address on your profile page isn't the same as the one you are checking now.

If neither of these is the case, I encourage you to submit an/another Administrative Ticket so that Langdon can look into it.

Thanks. I'm curious why (as it seems) there is a difference between the notifications sent automatically for the top-five finishers and "manual" requests for validation originals.

Judi--do you get emails from users through the system? I'll send you one in a bit...as a test.

ETA: Sent already.

Another thought: the Proof requests come from: proof@dpchallenge.com.

You might want to whitelist that address in your email system, or maybe whitelist the whole domain dpchallenge.com

(I just checked to see if dpchallenge is on any global blacklists and it is not.)

Ok Neil

I didn't receive ANY emails from dpchallenge.com since yesterday. I checked my blocked and safe senders and @dpchallenge.com has been on my safe senders since I started with dpc. and it definitely isn't on the blocked senders list. Very weird!!
