(it's all bear's, kirbic's and RamblinR's fault...)

I'm starting to watch the videos, since I don't have a book yet.

1. How do you catalog your photos? I like to store them by date. But I'm interested in being able to find the photos again. I used to create collections and keywords in Bridge, but when I moved a year's worth of photos to a different drive, I lost all of the information.

so... do you rename your photos? If you took a trip to hong kong, do you add a prefix of hong kong to the file name? Do you use keywords? What's the best way to organize while still being able to move photos between drives?

I'd suggest that you continue to do what's comfortable, that is, store them by date. Then keyword them. If you need to move them between drives, you can. You can do this either from within Lr, in which case you just use the library interface to do so, or you can move the folders with the OS, in which case Lr will show the moved folders as "lost" and you can show Lr where they are. The first option is the cleanest.
I have Lr set to store all its changes to sidecar files; these files get stored along with the photos, and should you move the folder, all the files go along. Nothing lost.

Wendy, I doubt there's a right answer to that question. I bet everybody is doing it differently.

I let lightroom import them by date. If there is something specific in that date i rename it by adding information after the date e.g. 2017-06-25 Bus Trip
That way the dates remain in place.
You can tag all the images for the the place is or who is in the image and you can add multiple tags to an image e.g. surf, beach
Then you have catalogues. I use these if I want to make a book of some of my work. If there is an image that I have edited (or not) and I want it to go into the book I drag that image to the book catalogue. It will always remain in the date section but will also now show in the catalogue and you can edit it from there as well.

When I was in the second grade, a classmate and I painted a mural along one side of the classroom which could have been an early storyboard for Jurassic Park, and I've been a dinosaur ever since.

I hate all these proprietary cataloging "solutions" precisely for the reason you state -- they ALWAYS change SOMETHING which screws things up ... for that matter good luck finding something which will read a Photoshop file in thirty or forty years ... :-(

I copy my files into individually-dated folders within monthly folders for that year. I made a spreadsheet file with a worksheet for each month (but this COULD be printed blank in filled in manually) into which I enter the number of pictures, location, and a one-line summary of the subject(s). I print this file periodically to PDF and eventually to paper.

I also take each day's folder and make an "index print" (like an old 35mm contact sheet) with 12 pictures/page; this is also made into a PDF, and can be printed. This way I have two types of "summaries" of my work I can search through, with or without a computer.

BACKUP STRATEGY:

Every time I have enough pictures I burn those daily folders to a CD; I don't delete the files from the SD card until this is done, so they always exist in two places on two types of media. At the end of the month I burn all the captures and edited images to one or more DVDs.

You can do this also ^^.

But ... you must change things in lightroom.
Import in lightroom using the date.
If you have shot something over a few days and they would be in one folder then move all image for that shoot into one date.
Delete other dates
NOW ... rename the folder.
When you rename the folder it will rename it in pictures folder and so if ever something happens they will still be on your hard drive in this folder but any editing you have done to the images will not be there as that is part of the lightroom program.
You need to backup your lightroom folder if you want to keep the changes also.
If you move files from your computer to an external hard drive you need to do this through lightroom.
It will move everything for you and keep the editing done to anything with the files so that you can just continue as normal.
DON'T MOVE ANYTHING WITHOUT USING LIGHTROOM or it will not know where to find the images.

OR ... you can upload your images to your picture file (or wherever you keep your images) and then go into lightroom and tell it to import the folder
But after you have done that you must move things within lightroom so it knows where things are.

Hong Kong prefix is +852. If you take a trip to Hong Kong I will PM my phone no. :)

sorry could nor refrain...

I never rename a file, always keep the original.

You can also drag folders in LR library (not in develop) and is imports automatically. When you move a folder as kirbic said the folders will be lost but if you tell LR where the folder is everything is restored. LR also sorts by date, camera, lens etc...

Library filter-> Metadata and the can select: Date, Camera, Lens, Label

As an aside to all this, I'll say that my Lr library contains only my RAWs. All of the developed images that get exported are outside Lr. I can't imaging keeping a Lr library of developed JPEGs and TIFFs as well. I organize those by year and by date/event, and they are then easy to find.

Why does the import take soooooo long??

It would have been done so much faster in bridge. :(

It's so much slower than any other software I've ever tried (and I've tried most of the current offerings!)

Questions:
- How many files are you importing?
- How are they being transferred? Camera via USB? Card reader?
- Are you building 1:1 previews immediately?

I understood they had updated bridge and that it does most everything that lightroom does.
If this is the case, just use Bridge

But if I just use bridge, I still need to import into lightroom...

And I'm importing a slew of them. I'm taking the card out of the camera and inserting it into a slot on my computer. And I'm just importing them. I haven't figured out the 1:1 previews and what it means. (but I'm still testing the camera, so one of the things I want to do is to be able to bring the files to 100% to look at noise, detail, etc., so I'm assuming I'd want the 1:1 preview then.

I always first copy the files to my computer and import them from there.

When you import the files, upon selecting it, you can double click on it to open, then there is a slider on the bottom right that says zoom.

Hope this helps.
