Okay so I know there's been talk of reasons why this hasn't happened... But for some reason I can't find those reasons in the forums...

So, my idea would be to come up with all the reasons why this would be a good thing and why this would be a bad thing...

I will try to edit this post as the ideas come in but I feel as though there has to be a legitimate reason why this hasn't happened... So please feel free to add your two cents to the matter and I will consolidate this thread to the original post as much as I can. Maybe the talks will spark Langdon to give it a go?

Pros
-New users are drawn in by using their camera phones for photography
-Easier to navigate the site on your phone
-Most people don't use computers anymore for their day to day life outside of work.
-More images per challenge due to more people joining/easier to navigate the site
-Allows people to easily get to the site and vote while they're not home or in front of a computer (there's a con to this below)

Cons
-No one to write the code for the mobile-friendly version
-Voting on your mobile device isn't as effective as a computer monitor for quality (there's a pro to this above)
-Expensive up front cost of creating the mobile-friendly version
-Maintenance is not only most likely expensive but very time consuming
-Does Langdon even want to?

I would really love a mobile version.

I think that it's actually... MANDATORY in this day and age.

I check my entry every time on my cellphone after I enter them on my desktop.

2017!! Let's go!!

I do tech support for a living & I'm amazed at how many people have Internet svc & WIFI just for their phones. No computers at all.

Actually this is a very interesting post. I talked with Langdon (almost an year ago) about a mobile version of the site. I told him I would love to help on this, but I've never received any answers.

Actualy I did a (partial) mobile version of the site, and I tried to show him, but, again, no answers, so I don't know if it is fine to share with you my little mobile site ^_^

I am sorry to hear he did not reply to you especially as you were offering to help. Guess that says it all.....

No problem, I guess he is very busy, or he just don't like my mobile site, and don't want to hurt me :-P

My biggest issue with a mobile site is that photos often look really super on my phone then when I look at them on a desktop monitor I realise they are not so great. That may be just my eyesight.

I would certainly vote more often if I could do it on my phone as I tend to work 9 to 5 on my desktop and after that all my internet use is on my phone or tablet.

No matter how convenient, voting for photography on a phone seems unfair to the photographer. You really cannot get the essence
and detail on a small screen. I’d give Picasso’s Guernica a 4 if I were viewing it on my phone.

Don't get me wrong I agree with this... However, the last challenge I entered I received 65 votes. And I'll be honest if I had a mobile version to vote on images... I'd vote more. It's convenient, it's easy, it's fun, it's a good thing to do when you have a few minutes before a meeting or whatever.

Again, don't get me wrong... Voting is much more "accurate" with a computer screen but if the site wants to live past the next 5 years, average votes and activity need to go up.

That's my 2¢.

I'm mostly voting from my iPad, and the reason is that not only the screen is better than my computer screen, I also have the possibilty to enlarge the image to look more closelyl to details of the image, something I can't do on my normal computer.

And personally I think when people find it ok to submit images taken by phone, they also should accept that voting is done by phone. It's up to the voter!

Instagram is a mobile picture sharing app that has over 700 million active users...

"Mobile" being the keyword...

Something I thought of about price to build/maintain the hypothetical mobile version...

So I would assume you'd need to pay the creator of the code a significant amount for building and maintaining the site so would $5.00 more for a yearly subscription to have that done make people not renew their membership?

Honestly, to me, it wouldn't deter me from re-upping my membership... But I know that people already don't want to re-up their membership at $25 a year let alone $30...

I'm curious what everyone thinks on this...

ETA: I don't know if $5.00 is the correct amount, I was just tossing a number...

Surely the site owner simply needs to allow voting on mobile phones - the cheap option tho obviously a responsive site would be better

My feeling is that a phone screen is to small to fairly judge a photograph

This seems to be a common concern.

I'm curious to know how many more votes happen if you could vote via phone.

Why would it matter how many if they weren't as "valid"?

And what if you (someone) voted half of the photos on a phone, and the others on a 27" monitor at home ... how would that be fair or consistent voting?

Being the devil's advocate, what if someone voted half the photos when sober and the other half when drunk on a 27 inch monitor? :)

That's beyond DPC's control -- limiting what monitor one can use isn't (as much). The idea is to do what we can to ensure that each entry is treated as equitably as possible.

My rebuttal to that... someone who is voting via phone is going to be voting most likely on all of the photos on the phone therefore the images are being treated equal to that specific person. This wouldn’t screw any scoring. Only time it would is if the person votes some on a phone and others on a computer.

Not one specific image is being voted on by people using phones while others are being voted on by people using computers.

Well, for what it's worth, I just tried voting one of the current challenges on my very good Samsung 8+ smartphone and then came back to it here on the 27-inch monitor to see if I agreed with what I'd done. The answer was, surprisingly, "Yes". But it's worth noting that the Samsung has the biggest and sharpest screen in the phone biz right now, so this probably wasn't a fair test. Lord knows I used to try looking at challenges on my old, much smaller LG phone and it was hopeless...

I guess the point of this thread was just to say that a mobile friendly version of the site would bring far more people than you may think.
