Happy owner of a new D500 here.
My work has assigned me with recording the super-exciting HIPA video which will be later required viewing for employees.
I'd like to use the new camera ...
The main issue with this in the past has been poor sound quality.
I'm looking for a hack or inexpensive option for getting better audio. Recording audio on a nearby iPhone 7 and then merging it is one consideration. At this point, I do not have an external mic.

Since the assignment is tomorrow, any shopping will need to be done locally. Dodd and Best Buy are local.

Any tips are appreciated! =)

Zoom H1's are what I used when I worked for the videography company.

They work great. Might find it at best buy although I don't know for sure.

My favorite is the Tascam DR100, but like the Zoom H1, your chances of finding it locally are not good. I did quickly look at Best Buy's site, and it looks like all the higher quality units are pretty much special order, so 3 days out or so.
You might be better off picking up an external mic at Best Buy and using that as input to the DSLR. As long as the mic is off-camera you should avoid noise from camera vibration/handling.

So... I don't know if you have AmazonNow in your area but sometimes you can get it delivered within a couple hours... Might be able to get what you REALLY want if you search via AmazonNow.

THere are a few rental options here but I'm not sure how serious I want to get. I know the company will reimburse me for somewthing like that.

Sounds like a rental from Dodd is a great option. They should be able to provide guidance on what is compatible with the camera and best suited to the project. Good sound quality makes all the difference, IMO.

An omni-directional microphone picks up sounds from all directions almost equally -- that might not be what you want.

What are you recording, and what's the approximate setup? (I do quite a bit of audio recording.)
