Bride Generously Offers Her Wedding to Be Photographed for Free

I just came across this article among my notifications. I wonder how many photographers will take her up on her offer.
10/17/2017 03:16:04 PM · #2
Lol. This is sadly one of the reasons getting into photography scares me.

"Shoot for me for free so you can update your portfolio"
"You can shoot this for your portfolio"
Them - "I have this amazing event coming up and you'd be perfect for the job!" - Me - "Great, what is it??" Them - "A wedding, you can do it for the portfolio addition because it will be beautiful!" Me - "I cost..." Them - "Oh, no... You don't need the money, these photos will add more than money to your portfolio"

Blah blah blah...

If it's a real article then there's no point in anyone trying to write satire anymore ... :-(

FWIW sharing the copyright is the option of the photographer, not the customer.

Judging by the source it seems to be real. And it's not just the photographer they want free either, it's the caterer and hotel accommodation too.

This doesn't surprise me honestly. Worked in retail for years and apparently everyone deserves everything for free according to the customers.

I think it is satire, one of the tags is "humor"?
10/17/2017 04:10:28 PM · #9
prolly.

Here's the thing though.... Even if it is satire, which is seems more likely given the "humor" tag... The idea that it is so believable is telling on how often us photographers get the "use it for your portfolio" crap.

Honestly, next time someone tells me this I may do it and only give them the files after I edit them all into "negatives." And then I'll tell them this is going to be used in my "unique" portfolio. *smirks...*

Try taking an ordinary photo and save it with a JPEG quality setting of about 5% ... ;-)

Yes, it's a joke. Under humor, and Fstoppers original.

Though it's a good idea ;)

Read the article in its entirety and it seems pretty much like a huge put-on...though I wonder if this is the reason why Lydia is currently in Halifax? *ducking for cover*

I estimate there are now 29,841 brides out there saying "Why didn't I think of that?"

If you haven't already smelled the rat, so to speak, you have to realize it's satirical when you come to this:

"She already has her entire wedding itinerary completely planned out. The ceremony will take place in a very dark church with stained glass windows and high ceilings, with the reception being held local community fire hall. She plans on applying her own makeup, to make sure she looks exactly the way she wants. She also indicated that her wedding photos are going to be the result of a group effort."

It's not really that far fetched as we all know.

I saw an advertisement for a Yoga lady who was creating videos online and people joined for a fee for the year. She wanted someone to come and take photos for her Instagram site, no payment but she would credit you on her site (can't see how that would help me as these people are online and could be from anywhere and would not be local enough for my services)
Another local motel/hotel wanted images for pamphlets etc no recognition no payment but both would allow you to use them for your portfolio. Really!!! wow thanks.

What I don't understand with this is that they have something they can offer in return so you do get a payment of sorts.
Yoga lady could have offered a year subscription to her site, costs her nothing anyway so why not give something of yours in return.
Hotel could have offered a weekend accommodation free with a gift voucher or something.

Whilst some photographers would still not do the job the point is that they give a payment in kind.
Why can't people/businesses at least see this, see that our services are worth something, otherwise just get out your mobile phone and go for it.

I missed that. Seems I'm really gullible.

if it was real, i wonder if a cynical photographer would take a disruptive approach to this to prove a point

Had me fooled at first. It literally hits all nerve ending on a photographer.

I was invited to a group on Facebook not long ago for local wedding services (ranging from photographers to DJ's and so on) so that brides can post there and ask for services... I just saw a post for someone asking for engagement photos... And their price range... Get this... PORTFOLIO ADDITIONS!

You should send a screen-shot to the F-Stoppers. :-)

Have never understood the something for nothing" approach; they have a service/product they want to get paid for, but not pay the photographer. Why don't they just use their cellphone, or their point and shoot, or rent a "good" camera? Clearly a pro brings something else to the table and should be compensated somehow for that "something".

That being said, if brides want to trust their "special day" on someone who needs port shots.... caveat emptor.

FWIW I have no problem with the barter system, but it has to be equal on both sides. I traded my metal detector, which I was trying to unload for the princely sum of $50 CDN, for 5 classes (worth $70) with the owner of the yoga studio where I practice.

But even though thae original post was in jest, doesn't seem that far-fetched that a bride would expect an amateur to flip out over the opportunity to shoot her wedding for free (and let's not forget that whole *shared copyright* thing) so that the photog would have material for their port...lame.

Considering that the copyright isn't hers to offer up, that just makes it all the more ridiculous.

It's just such a ridiculous piece that it can't be real.

I would imagine there are about as many chefs and hoteliers out there willing to give up food and lodging as there are pro wedding photographers that would take this supposed job.

Heck, I'm not remotely a pro, but having shot four weddings to date, I'd tell anyone that approached me with "Portfolio Exposure" for my fee to go pound sand.
