Decided on the heart of my new system and bought an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 cpu. Benchmarks suggest I am looking at a minimum 8x improvement over my 8 year old dual core Athlon, probably better than that since I will be running OS and applications from an SSD instead of a hard disk. Will probably go with an Asus B350 chipset motherboard, maybe an X370 if a good price.

Looking at upgrading monitors now. I currently have a 21" 1680x1050 monitor (and a smaller secondary screen, which isn't suitable for photo editing), so I have lots of options that would be big upgrades, even if not current day bleeding edge. I've been looking at 4k monitors in the 24-27" size range. Some of the articles I've read suggest they may not offer advantage at less than 30 inches in size and to look at 1440p monitors instead.

Opinions and experiences?

I disagree with the idea that you need a 30" monitor to see an advantage from 4k. I'm typing this on a 15.6" laptop with a 4k screen. Believe me, it's a tremendous upgrade from a "full HD" resolution screen. That said, if budget makes you choose between 4k and a better panel, choose the better panel and take 1440p. Here is a short recent thread that may be of some help.

Thanks. This Benq is currently a front runner. It appears to be designed for creative work and it rotates to portrait mode: Benq PD2700Q

I'd like to keep it under $350, so that means I am probably looking at a 1440 unit, unless I run across a great deal. I have added some others to my list and am drilling down into the specs that are important to me.

I tend to stay 18-24 months behind the bleeding edge when I build a system and I usually go for bang for the buck.

Looks like a very good deal... I'm currently seeing a 10% off coupon on top of the $329 price, which brings it under $300. My wife is looking for a 2nd monitor for her laptop and I just might jump on one of these.

ETA: Jumped. Be here Tuesday.

I read some in depth reviews of the BenQ earlier and may jump on that and a motherboard this evening.

Interesting. When I went to put the monitor in my Amazon cart, Amazon insisted someone had bought it for me already. I suspect the link I posted earlier had a reference to my account and your purchase of it was seen by Amazon's system as a gift. You can actually buy me one if you like, though.
