OK. In the Tom Petty challenge I was, once again I was punished for actually being creative, on a site that supposedly encourages creativity. I couldn't believe it as I watch a score that was, once, sitting at 7.000 started a painfully slow and steady decline. Yeah I know I still finished in the top ten...yay me.

Now here's the challenge. If you're one of those people who gave me a sub-4 vote, fess up to it. Explain why. Bet you're all too chickenshit, but as someone with a very long history of voting generously - even when I'm in the same challenge as them - I am more than somewhat miffed.

And people wonder why there are so few entries these days, that there is a problem attracting new photogs? Well duh....'yeah, come join DPC and get your ass kicked to the curb'.

And this is one of the reasons why I don't really enjoy DPC that much any more. Susan, you asked for feedback, you were given the feedback you asked for, and you then called out that person who had taken the time to respond.

I didn't vote you low, and I think your photo is nicely crafted, but Ken had a point, and you can't really compare your shot to the Gyaban Cat.

The Gyaban cat shot has impeccable edges(things in the periphery) - and there is a feeling of "swishing forward movement" - your shot has the feel of a really well don't shoe ad containing graffiti, not the feel of a runaway train with an impending crash.

That being said, remember, art is not a contest, and you being happy with it, and positive feedback is most important.
Also, photographic art does not have to be like sports, a high percentage, always scoring well- its about emotion, good work and awful work, knowing the difference and improving- and given all that, what the hell is the difference between a 6.7 and a 7.7?

holy crap, look at those wonderful, gushing comments you got during the challenge.
and then the thoughtful ones afterwards. you are a wealthy woman.

i usually get nothing, or a "quaint but probably won't do well..."

only 2 people gave you a sub-4 vote. you're seriously starting a thread to yell at 2 people for not liking your picture? and no, I'm not one of them.

Nah, you're just kidding surely?

Listen, here's the awful truth. One girl's creative is another man's kitch.

Had I voted, not a 4, but perhaps a 5? 6? But no comment. We are certainly dealing with different decks so explanation would be futile.

I'm including the 7 4s I got too, Don. I meant to put in sub-5s in my original post but didn't notice my error til now.

And yes I am very grateful for the comments and those who clearly did give me a high score. I always am. It's those who vote down everyone - I only had enough time to look at the scores of the TT - that I really despise.

Anyway, whatever. I have a life and perhaps I should stop wasting it here and channel it towards more interesting and productive pursuits.

ok, I don't know how a 4 is sub-4, but if that's the case, I'll let you know.

*deep sigh* I amended that post. Just got home from work, I'm fuckin tired, and I have a class tonight. So sue me.

And yes, thanks much to those who gave supportive, positive post-challenge comments...I only just saw them now and yes they did lift my spirits a bit.

Sorry if i did snap at you, Ken. The filter between my mouth and brain takes some time to get in place in the mornings, and being pissed off already didn't help. Anyway, I do know you were being supportive. Really I do :-)

ETA: on the plus side...at least I don't have a gazillion images to upload for validation ;-)

Susan.... I just took a minute and looked at the scoring on the first nine.

Very few 4 and below.

*NONE* of them reached for the wilds....well, Judi's did a little.

Yours did. You got punished for it. You *had* to know to a certain extent that would happen.

You still got a 10, five 9s, three 8s, eleven 7s, & fourteen sixes.

That's terrific. So it didn't resonate with a few folks. Big whoop!

The way I see it, you got clear reactions on both sides of the fence. That's always a good thing.

YMMV....

Sorry for the interruption, but don't these two statements contradict each other? :-)

I gave the picture a high score -- I'm not sure how you can have a "correct" perspective when the style is surreal/fantastic ...

How so? I gave my opinion and stated that yours may vary.

I have no idea what you're referring to by this.

"That's always a good thing" can easily be mistaken for a statement of fact rather than an opinion, at least by me.

The other part was in reference to Susan's picture, and some of the earlier comments about (as I remember) the "perspective being off" might have contributed to lower votes.

Okay...

Hence my comment about "Reaching for the wilds".

I was truly just offering my opinion.

I feel somewhat comfortable being honest with Susan because we have some history.

I also think sometimes she worries too much about the voters who don't have the same level of vision she does.

It's a freakin' cool image.

Got it in one, Jeb! And thanks for the kind words :-)
