The Witch. The Skeleton. The Ghost. The Candelabra. The Gravestone. The Spider. And So On. Feature a specific icon or symbol of the spooky and supernatural in your photo. Your icon can be from any culture, does not need to be Halloweeny. Okay to milk cliches.

Discuss...?

I'm hoping to see some killer shots in this one. Can't wait to see what people come up with.

I've always found it strange how many people want to "discuss" topics beforehand, but there's almost never any discussion after the photos are actually taken except for the occasional "why did this ..." thread.

To me, pre-submission discussion would seem likely to have two effects; either people give away (or have stolen) ideas, or there are opinions expressed which would tend to restrict or limit what people might consider submitting.

That said, I've shot almost every one of those subjects for previous challenges, so if anyone needs any ideas ... :-)

I think the trend is because... folks want to know if they are interpreting the challenge topic correctly. It's especially true for the topics that aren't "black and white".

Folks want to know if their "take" on the topic is the same as others... that it will resonate with the voters.

Or... that's what I think.

Once the voting is happening... their entry is in... and the game is over.

So to speak.

I agree completely -- that's exactly why I see it as at least somewhat detrimental in that it encourages conformity to the "party line" (of Forum blabbermouths) rather than encouraging unfettered imagination and creativity, unencumbered by the expectations of others.

I used to enjoy discussing an upcoming challenge. It helped me figure out how I was going to respond, what I might enter. But I was told to cease & desist, as some took pre-challenge discussion as an attempt to control. Others did make an attempt to control, threatening to low-vote anything that fell outside their expectation. My interest in discussing a challenge after it's over is zero. My interest in post-challenge complaints is less than zero. My interest in challenges--& my inevitable 5.x score--is very low. I still vote, looking for the work of the handful of artist-photogs still here.

Yeah, do tell....!!! Sadly though it seems to be conformity to the party line that does the best here, so I may sit this one out. Or, enter just to spite the haters of creativity.

Wait, wtf. This challenge is very clear - is dependent on time-honored icons - and not subject to interpretation by forum blabbermouths, so what the heck are you saying Snaffles? Consider the challenge suggester, who is hardly against creativity. Just look at my bevy of 4's.

Remember, all of this only really matters if you care about the (peculiar) numerical score more than doing what you want ... I (often) go back to one of my favorite images here -- not a "great picture" but people recognized it for what it was supposed to be (not what it was), and it met the challenge (to the surprise of many voters) -- a last-place finish at DPC (but a first in the Posthumous pool), and some great comments which showed that it really "reached" a few people, which is all that's really important ...
