Extravagant / Immoderate / Over the Top
Challenge Details: Go over the top and do some floridly excessive imaging for this one.

I have no idea what this means. Please help!

Is the image supposed to be extravagantly and immoderately processed?

Or is the content of the image supposed to have extravagance in it?

What in the world does "floridly excessive imaging" mean?

Since we are more than a week into the submission period, and only days from the submission deadline, wouldn't it be best to avoid placing a narrower definition on the challenge description. Not that DPC is ever fair, it would be a betrayal to those who have already worked on this project and submitted their creative interpretation. But, maybe it doesn't matter anymore.

Good idea.

Also a good idea.

It means that the image should have too many flowers in it - not sure if it's a good idea, but...

Another good idea.

No flowers in my entry, so I'm going to delete my entry. That's exactly what I meant with my comment. That's a good example of DPC forum activity which reduces participation.

While I mostly agree that pre-submission discussion tends to limit creativity, it only does so if we let it.

I'm 99% sure that the remark about flowers was meant primarily in jest, since the root of "florid" is the same as that of flowers, but I'm certainly not going to let one person saying "it has to have flowers" change what I shoot, even if it was meant seriously -- changing what I shoot for the sake of a two-point higher vote from one person is not an option for me. FWIW my entry is already in and does not contain any flowers.

So... nobody else knows what it means either.

Alrighty then.

Use The Google or a dictionary and go from there.

I did that before I asked here. *sigh*

BTW... Goggling "floridly excessive imaging" brings up some interesting images. I do hope this isn't what the challenge is about... *rolleyes*

Are you being serious? I can't tell if you're being serious or if you just don't know how to research things?

Make it fancy, replete with wretched excess, like an 18th century fop for example.

Finally! A real answer!

Thank you.

In my experience the most common use of florid might be to describe someone who gets into an argument, and becomes progressively more excited until standing red-faced waving arms about ...

I suggest shooting whatever you want, but over-doing whatever you do in either composition, exposure, or processing, or (most likely) some combination. You can even do it with flowers if you want to cover all your bases....

Sorry about that. Use of etymology to make a definition of a word, while it may sometimes be helpful, is more often likely to be or to lead to etymological fallacy, as has been the case here. Common usage of the word nowadays is more commonly as 'elaborately (over) decorated', in a literal or figurative sense. Webster

If your entry remains deleted, I protest my innocence. I may even protest floridly, but this is a family forum, so...

it means you have to go to florida. more than once.

Yet, I was serious. It makes no sense to me.

Even after I looked stuff up.

I get it... I am kinda stupid. But, this doesn't seem like a challenge description that most folks would understand without questions.

Maybe so... Maybe I'm worse than I thought.

"beyond the pale" is what floridly excessive imaging is :-)

Maybe that thesis will carry more weight when I see a front page without your name on it ... :-)

Well, since I got an explanation, I entered and I probably wouldn't have without it.

I think it's all just... Life.

If you're gonna let one person's opinion effect your decisions, well...

I hope you'll put it back in. There is no right or wrong, it appears.

I think if the Challenge Details had been blank, I would not be so confused.

So I had a wonderful idea.

I went to the local jewelry store and told them they should bring out all their diamonds and gems, pile them on the counter, so I could shoot.

I won't be entering any challenges for the next 3-5 years.
