So I was wondering who might live out in Portland/Astoria/Yachats Oregon. I leave for that neck of the woods on Nov 15th going to Chester California (my Sisters) for Thanksgiving then back to Portland via Bend for 2 weeks.

I’d appreciate any travel tips you might have. I’m not sure about the weather either.

Thanks for your information...

Some ideas:
- Visit Doc Achoo in Eugene
- Check out some seaside scenery near Yachats; Thor's Well is just south of there
- Check out some wineries on the trip back from the coast to Portland; there are a ton of them
- If the weather's foul, do some antiquing along the coast; there seem to be as many antique shops as gas stations. Maybe more.

I camped with friends (a couple of DPC alumni, strangeghost and smartypants) near Yachats after the eclipse this year. Beautiful area, lots to explore.

If your passing thru Newport, which is north of Yachts along the coast, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is a cool place to visit!

I don't know of much to do in Portland, but if you are going through Bend, there is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, on highway 97 just south of Bend. Smith Rocks State Park at the little town of Terrebonne, north of Bend, also on Highway 97.

The number one choice of what to do on the Western side of Oregon in November is... get wet, get blown away, slip and slide through a snow storm, marvel at any sun breaks that happen. What ever you do though, in the Portland area, is absolutely do not feed the homeless. When you do it makes it harder for us that live around here because they then expect it from the rest of us and encourages more to move in.

Usually the scenic section of the Gorge is a must see for all of the waterfalls but after the fire we had in the Gorge a couple of months ago, it just isn't up to standard right now. It's not so much the burned areas but all of the clear cutting they did to try and stop the fires. It could make for some dramatic type photos against the waterfalls but a lot of places you can't get to now because the trails are not safe yet. If you do go up the Gorge, seeing the Oregon side from the Washington side gives a very wide panorama of the scenic area. The Silver Falls area near Salem is also an excellent choice if you like waterfalls and woods. Just watch out for the rampaging Chipmunks down the trails. They will run you over and mug you for food at the North Falls park. LOL!

Mt. Hood has lots of snow already and they are opening the ski areas, so that is always a good place to visit. You shouldn't have to worry about chains too much yet but with the rain we are getting right now, if it comes down to pass level that could change.

The coast is a great view in the fall. With the weather the way it is right now, lots of big waves. It's a good time to go beach combing, but do keep one eye on the waves coming in if you do and watch out for logs that could be moved by the waves.

November is also the time we usually get at least one big wind storm, with winds hitting almost to over 100+ mph. I've been at Crown Point in the fall with winds pushing 100 mph and have pictures of some of the smaller waterfalls flowing upwards because of the wind.

We could have any and all kinds of weather in this part of Oregon in November, so be prepared and keep your camera ready. I would also say spend lots of money to help our economy but we made a killing on the Eclipse this summer, so we are good for the moment.

Thank you vervmuch for the information...I have a cousin that loves bed in Portland and she did some research and found out that as of Fri l(yesterday) the road that takes you out to all the Waterfalls is closed....I can still get to Crown Point...but it’s closed after that and she doesn’t think it will be open until maybe summer...deep sigh. So primarily we’ll be driving down the coast to get to my sisters in Chester California. On our return we’re going to go to Bend...again weather permitting...I’m hoping to be able to get to Sparks Lake.

Different landscape for sure
