Been using Panasonic as my everyday carry cameras and video for several years now, and reserving my Nikons for “serious” photography especially landscapes. A recent epic trip made me rethink the bulk of the Nikons (especially shooting two systems). I even bought a lightweight Nikon when I got back, a NOS D5300, but Nikon crippling it with a lack of two control dials had me frustrated while shooting.

Was kinda hoping Nikon would come out with a mirrorless sooner than later, but other than a couple of patents llooks like they are dragging their heels. Started looking a Fuji as an interm gap, after all my favorite film had always been Velvia.

But if the specs & hype are 1/2 as good as the specs and initial impressions, it looks like Panasonic is upping their photo game with the G9. If so I might be quite busy on craislist & ebay selling Nikon gear. Of course I’ll keep all my classic MF Nikkor glass that I purchased in the late 80s & eary 90s, but those lenses worked better on the Panasonic than the Nikons anyway.

I have never been happier since I dropped that big heavy bag full of lenses cameras and bits. I have been using mirrorless for quite a while now and would never go back to all that kit. The results speak for themselves, mirrorless is the way to go, unless of cause you shoot high speed sports or underwater stuff :)

Enjoy, sounds like a very good camera

MAK, why not underwater? I use my G85 w/ Nikon mount Tokina 11-16 (with metabones speed booster) with my Ewa housing with good results. The resulting 7.8-11.4mm f2 is a great underwater combo imo.

I recently switched to M43s from Nikon apsc, and before that, Sony and Nikon FF, and i'm happy so far. Did my first wedding with them last Saturday and another coming up this Saturday. I was planning on getting a GH5 or two to go with the G85's I have and i'm glad I decided to wait until the spring for them as the G9 looks pretty much perfect for my needs.

I switched to Panasonic because I wanted to go with a hybrid photography/video system and the G85's are great but what i'm after for my main cameras over them is the more robust body, the two SD card slots, the 20mp sensor rise over the 16mp looks good and a few other bits and pieces such as having a camera that can do 180fps. The 18mb files from 6k photos look amazing and might be very useful. G9 looks perfect.

With micro four thirds i've found the difference in image quality compared with APSC to be hardly anything. The leap up to full frame is obviously much more noticeable but thinking about the end product and not pixel peaking it really doesn't make much difference to me. I don't crop images, apart from a very slight crop to straighten verticals or horizontals. I'm not that massively bothered about super high ISO - 6400 was my top end on full frame, 3200 on APSC, i've been using 1600 on M43 but i'm probably happy with 3200. I tend to whack a load of grain on my photos anyway. I'm happy enough with the shallow depth of field from the f1.2 lenses I have and the deeper depth of field is actually very useful anyway.

Plus, I really like some of the lenses for M43 - some really lovely glass in this system.

I like the way my work flow is with the dual slots on my D7200, one records stills & the other Video. I hope the G9 allows this. Of course I seldom use video on the D7200, the Panasonics blow it away for that. I've been quite rough on my G85, I think it's a lot tougher than it seems, just because it's so light. I shoot in pouring rain with it, without worrying a bit & has been dropped quite a few times.

I'm also super excited that the G9 has 1/250 flash sync and NO POP-UP FLASH. I always hated the pop-up on the Nikon DSLRs, wanted a digital version of the N90s. You have to go really big & heavy with Nikon to eliminate the pop-up.

I think the G85 is more sturdy than I give it credit. Really, I think they are totally up for the job I do at the moment and the added features of the G9 are just 'want not need' extras. The G85 is certainly an amazing camera for the price. The other thing i'm liking with the G9 is the size - the G85 is just slightly too small for my liking.

I don't think I've ever used the pop up flash on any camera i've owned to be honest, so i'm with you there.

Forgot about under water housing :) it is not something I have ever done, would love to try it though.

Oh, and i've just remembered another, for me huge, feature the G9 has that the G85 doesn't. Minimum shutter speed for Auto ISO. It's crazy that Panasonic have only ever put that feature into the GH5 (so I assume the G9 will have it). Drives me nuts on the G85. I imagine it's such a simple firmware fix as well.

Old thread, I know, but finally picked up the G9 and I love it. Unfortunately, I can't even add it to my profile, as it isn't one the site! A flagship stills camera from a major manufacturer that's been out for a year, wow!! A lot of M43 glass missing too.

Items only get added to the equipment database when someone informs us like this -- unfortunately manufacturers haven't kept us in the notification loop when they market new products ...

Send us a photo of any missing items (use a Contact Us ticket) and they'll get added ...

What the General said. Our members tell us what gear they've acquired, and we add them to the database.

Usually they get added within hours. There's just too many cameras and lenses out there for it to be kept up with when there isn't a request.

I switched to M4/3 a couple of years back. Image quality is better than my Canon 50D. The size works a lot better with all the traveling I am doing for work now. I have an Olympus OMD E-M10 with a 14-150 as my "big" camera and an E-PM2 with a 14-42 pancake lens as a minimalist travel unit.
