Blue ribbon

If this image was in a book of a vested, well known, celebrated photographer we would ask for a challenge to emulate his work. We actually had one in the style of jagar, admitting that he was pretty good. At least for us.

A few years after, we mark him with 4s an 5s and 6s. No 1 and 2 and 3 means a certain progress though.
It is not a form breaking oeuvre, nothing blurry or unrecognizable, no use of neologisms or any pretension. Just a wonderful street shot wonderfully processed. Then?
Can we rip this image to pieces and say why it was not more uniformly appraised?

"Can we rip this image to pieces and say why it was not more uniformly appraised?"

What, exactly, are you asking? It scored over a 7, which is an indicator it was widely accepted. Are you wondering why it didn't receive lower votes? Should any follow-up evaluation take place as a standalone image, or in the context of the challenge for which it was submitted (Rule of Thirds)?

Not sure if this is relevant but out of the top 20 images in that challenge, only 4 entries had a 1,2 or 3 score. The other 16 had no 1,2 or 3.

I have probably misunderstood the point of your post:)

Sorry for the confusion. I wanted to be a bit sarcastic.
I just do not understand in this instance the marks of 4,5 and even 6. I wanted some explanation.
The "progress" is that there were no 1-3

Varying tastes.

I really don't understand what you're getting at. Has anyone ever gotten a 10 across the board ? Isn't the final score a calculation of all the votes entered?

There are people here who don't approve of street photography. There are people here who don't care for black and white photography. There are people here who don't appreciate shadows and contrasts.

Those people vote. Though that may be unfortunate, I say it's THEIR loss.

Good to bring this up now and again because if even ONE person reads this, looks again and thinks about what they're seeing, maybe they'll learn something new. Somehow. Someday.

I have my thoughts about the one to three votes but that's another conversation, and I'm not convinced that it denotes progress.

Different tastes and individual voting criteria. I can't bring myself to cast less than a 5 for an image that at least made an effort to fit the challenge. I also RARELY enter anything I think should deserve less than a 5, and yet... :/

For goodness sake it only got one 4 and three 5s. Was this not pretty close to uniformly appraised? I gave it 7. I can see it is all the things you say it is. But, there were other shots which appealed to me more. So there.

What Jomari said. ONE of the 56 voters pegged this one as "below average" (the 4) and THREE of them said it was "about average" (this is what people seem to think "5" means). All the rest said it was an above-average image, and 38 of the 56 had it well above average. That's a very solid consensus that this is a fine image.

I realize that Mariuca thinks its an exceptional image, and I don't disagree (I gave it an 8) but it's not the sort of shot that absolutely entrances the masses, so to speak. I think it scored damn well. Not only that, comparing the score THIS one got to other high scores in Jagar's oeuvre, I think it's properly ranked within his own body of images. I like it, but there's more than a few of his that have stopped me in my tracks...

ah well, the sad truth is that not everyone is as discerning as moi.

I'm amazed that it got the Blue. I felt great about that because I thought it was too sophisticated for broad appeal. I thought it was brilliant and gave it a 9.

I agree with Ken in terms of voting less than a 5. I think we all have voter burnout and have to really work hard to vote in present time and give fair scores to
what is in front of us. I've been voting for 8 years and it's hard work to evaluate something I may have seen a dozen times in one form or another. I wish
we could all take a sabbatical and hire an off site 'voting firm' to give us a brake. I would tell the firm that the voting scale was 5 through 10!

Did not want to open a can of worms.
The point is: jagar was always well liked here and the progress I was mentioning was the absence of 1-3 marks which nowadays are liberally applied. (I seldom mark images with 4 because there is always enough effort to give a mark of 5)

This was my rhetorical question in view of the fact that some people here get very upset with their marks
It is not a form breaking oeuvre, nothing blurry or unrecognizable, no use of neologisms or any pretension. Just a fabulous street shot. Then? A 7.23 average only?
