For those who have lots of camera equipment but not for business purposes:

Do you have a rider on your home insurance for your camera gear? I haven't really been able to ascertain if it's necessary or not.

I would think it is covered under your homeowner's policy like everything else.

call your agent! he/she will be the ONLY one that can tell you what is or isn't covered and what you need to do to cover what's important.

they can also explain things like replacement costs...

don't make assumptions, unless you are ready to be wrong.

ymmv ;-)

Exactly that is what I did. I put down all my under home owner's insurance.

Yeah, what Skip said.

I had to have a separate clause on my home insurance (and my travel insurance) as the items were of a higher value than the individual item allowance. Now I have an insurance policy specifically for the camera gear, then it's covered at home and when travelling.

Thanks for bringing this topic up. I had not even thought of my home owners insurance.

I've had this conversation with my agent for my Homeowners Insurance. As long as it's documented I am covered, as long as it is not being used commercially. That said, there is risk with making a claim on homeowners and a claim could wind up costing more in premium increases than the claim is worth. I'd only ever make a claim if there was a large loss associated with a home disaster, like a fire. I would not make a claim for a theft that was not related to a home burglary, for instance.
